Texas State

Is their program any good? It looks like their focus is strong, mainly because its built like CMU’s, but I just wanted to know if it’s really good.

Hooke - Texas State has been discussed in several recent threads. Broadway veteran Kaitlin Hopkins was hired to run the MT program last year and so the class of 2014 is her first class. My D knows many of the students who accepted spots in the program and they are all very talented.

An extremely talented senior I know turned down CCM for Texas State. She is a smart cookie so I am sure she made her decision based on extensive research.

We also know a very talented girl who who turned down NYU, BoCo, and several other top programs to be part of next years freshman class. This is the first year they will have an audition-based program and it sounds like the caliber of students there will be fantastic!

I know a guy who turned down CMU for Texas State (and happen to know the people above, too, I think) as well as girls who turned down Pace, Emerson, OU, etc. So they’ve got something going for them! :)

I predict this program to rise quickly.

Texas State has quite a few things working in their favor as they jump start the program:

Well known performer leading the program, with fresh ideas and aggressive attitude

Support from administration, including a new performing arts center on the horizon. The existing facilities are not bad to begin with.

Large campus with over 25,000 students located in the beautiful hill country region of Texas. Less than an hour from Austin and San Antonio.

The huge state of Texas has lots of talented kids. Most of which matriculate out of state for MT since there are only a few programs at colleges in Texas. And most of them are not considered elite. In other words, there is a huge built-in talent base.

Tuition is ridiculously low. Even out-of state tuition is much less than the typical private LAC.

Awesome weather for most of the year.

If/when Kaitlyn Hopkins puts this program on the map, I suspect other Texas schools may try to copy the model.
