My D’ friend is a freshman MT at Texas and LOVES it there. She along with other Texas MT majors just filmed a scene with Jack Black in his new movie, and then did a concert with Andrew Lippa. Having a great experience and getting a lot of opportunities!

Oh, every time I hear how great TSU is (and I believe it is, too) I get stressed out worrying that D won’t get a call back. It’s one of her top picks. Pointless thing to worry about but I can’t help it.

Wow, what a great article. Thanks for sharing. Good for Texas State! They deserve the publicity in Austin, and in the New York Times. Ms. Hopkins is building such a competitive program with all her connections. Our daughter would be one of the lucky few if she made it in. And Robin Lewis has so many impressive Broadway credits also. What a dream school. Well, we can dream, right?

I have looked for Texas State at the top of the page here with the college listings and can’t find it. (alphabetical order?)
Can anyone help me out?

The list you see at the top of the MT Forum is not an exhaustive list of all colleges offering MT. It is simply a list of sub forums that CC set up a while back to organize existing threads on various colleges or programs. If many threads exist on a particular school, a forum is set up to keep them filed in one place. Texas State is a newer program and there are not a lot of existing threads on it. The list at the top is NOT meant to be a list of all MT colleges, nor best, or recommended colleges. It simply is a list of links to individual forums on particular college programs.

The complete list of MT colleges is provided in the following thread called “The Big List”:
(which is pinned to the top of the list of threads on the MT Forum)

Thanks so much for the info. I have learned a lot from this website and have a feeling I’m going to be relying on it more and more. Such a great resource.

You should find out all that you can about Texas State. I have visited there twice. Once just to check it out and again for my son’s audition. Each time I was blown away. Kaitlin Hopkins is a creating something very special. Our audition was during the school’s spring break and 8-10 kids stayed in town to help out (they stayed at Kaitlin’s house because the dorms were closed.) They were far and away the friendliest, nicest kids that I met during the audition process. They love the school and the faculty. This program is red hot and I believe it will be one of the elites once the word gets out and her students hit the streets.

Thanks Dad! My D is a sophomore so we have just a little over a year before its time for her to begin the audition/application process during her senior year. We are in New Orleans, so I am looking for schools in the south that won’t break the bank!! My D also has fairly good academic stats (4.0 unweighted GPA, ACT=25 & PSAT=192 as freshman, all honors/gifted classes, total of 7 AP classes by the time she graduates), so we are also hopeful that will provide some merit scholarship money!!

At the moment, we are visiting state schools during Easter break and looking to schedule others during the summer. We might just have to go west during the summer!

mom2them - I’m doing the same thing as you. My D is a sophomore and we are visiting schools over break and looking into summer visits as well. Reading everything on this site has given me a wealth of information also someone recommended when you make the summer visists to go to campuses that have a summer program going on that way you can see what it is like. Best of luck!

Satisfied Dad:
What you said about the current students warms my heart because my son was one who stayed for auditions. It says a lot about the program and the faculty that all of those kids wanted to stay and be part of the process.

In looking for schools that “won’t break the bank” be sure to investigate what types of scholarships are available to MT’s and how that will impact the bottom line. You may find, as we have, that staying close to home is not always the most affordable option.

For example, at Tx State, out-of-state students who receive a scholarship for $1000 or more, qualify for an in-state tuition waiver. While it may seem like an unfair benefit for out-of-state kids, it actually levels the playing field, because unlike in some states, the in-state kids are not competing against out-of-state money.

Also, at many private, as well as many state schools, kids with good to great academic profiles are automatically given academic scholarships that may make them competitive with even your most affordable in-state options. Some, like Coastal Carolina, also offer perks like Honors housing and a free laptop to students in their Honors Program.

D is interested in Texas State MT and I’d love more feedback from current students and/or parents of students. We’ve heard great things, but I have concerns about the size of the school (had planned on a small, personal LAC college until my daughter decided to go all the way with MT!). How are the academics and the level of personal attention in the program?

I can’t say enough good things about the program at Texas State!!! My D is a freshman BFA Acting major there but was an MT kiddo throughout the auditioning process. She was fortunate enough to be cast in the main stage musical her first semester so spends a great deal of time with the MT students and Kaitlin Hopkins. The university really doesn’t seem that large. D’s dorm is right next to the theatre building and she will be able to watch the progress on the new theatre building going up right now. The MT and Acting students and faculty really form their own little “family”. With the wild fires that have been going on down there, Kaitlin Hopkins even offered her own home to our daughter if there was a need for evacuation - and she’s not even an MT kid. Again, I would highly recommend Texas State to anyone auditioning for MT or Acting programs.

My daughter’s voice teacher attended a workshop this summer at which Kaitlin Hopkins spoke. The voice teacher liked what she heard and has recommended that my daughter check out this program.

I’m interested to hear from parents of current students about life on campus. According to the Common Data Set, 80% of students live off-campus or commute. I know the MT students are busy kids, but a deserted campus every weekend doesn’t appeal to my child. The data set also says that only 1% of the undergrads are from out of state; would an East Coast girl feel comfortable there? The academic profile of the Freshman class is average. Would a top student find challenging classes and motivated peers? Thanks!

D certainly hasn’t mentioned the campus being deserted on the weekends. I agree that the majority of the students are from Texas - D is the only out of state Actor in her class. I honestly can’t quite figure that out as the programs are strong and the cost is so reasonable. The weekends seem to be jam packed with activities for the MT and Acting kids with master classes, etc. D has rehearsals for the main stage musical on Friday nights and Sunday evenings so a relaxing afternoon is welcome. She’s also been line dancing in Austin and in San Marcos - even had to send her some boots!!!
