Just got an email from Texas Tech saying they will give me the automatic $9,000 yearly scholarship plus a competitive $1,000 yearly scholarship from the College of Human Sciences. Feeling incredibly disappointed right now because I thought Texas Tech gives a lot more aid than that. To anyone who applied in the previous years, will they continue to update me as they award new scholarships, or is this all that they’re offering?
@dashastepanova0731 wow. You are disappointed and complaining about $10k a year?? It’s already an affordable, large state university.
Are you National Merit? If not, I would take the $10k and be beyond grateful.
Affordable for whom? The 9k was already a given so of course I’m going to be disappointed about only an additional 1k scholarship when I am desperately trying to get a full ride to uni.
Do you know if out of state schools give full rides often? I was looking at U of Arizona and U of Alabama but the 30k tuition plus 15k for housing and fees was a little much.
They do if you are an NMSQT finalist. Look at Tech’s sister school Angelo State. COA is ~$18K and you will get at least $12-13K. Rest can be made up through work.
I assume you will also get in state tuition if you are OOS.
Not knowing your full CV, it is hard to offer suggestion.
Are you National Merit or a D1 athlete? If not, I wouldn’t count on a full ride anywhere. State of Texas (true, highest ranking) public school Valedictorians get 1 year free tuition to state schools.
Check out West Texas A&M and Angelo State, I think they both give a lot of scholarships, but again, don’t count on a free ride anywhere.
Apply for grants and loans.
Have you looked at how much merit money you will receive from Arizona and Alabama based on your stats? Both have pretty clear merit grids on their websites.
My ds did not get anything other than automatic merit from Tech, so I did not have my dd apply there.
What are your test scores and gpa?
Ds got decent money from University of Houston, UT Dallas, and University of Arkansas. They offer full tuition and full rides, but he did not get those.
Other schools in or near Texas that offer big scholarships:
UT San Antonio
Baylor
Ole Miss
U Alabama
Apply to the university for automatic merit, apply to honors, and apply for departmental scholarships. It all adds up.
Another option is community college and commuting to a local school, which is our back up plan.
35 ACT and 4.889 GPA (rank 1). I have a feeling the $10k was automatic scholarships because the department of Human Sciences seemed to show that they offer a 1k a year automatic scholarship on top of the freshman merit scholarship. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for more financial aid but will apply to UNT and U of Ark in the meantime.
dashastpanova0731 - you have great stats for sure. well done!
i’m just going to throw this out there - our 2020 kid had great stats too. He was not offered a full -ride anywhere. Full rides - including room and board - are usually competitive type scholarships. think about it, families are the ones who should be paying for room and board for kids. Full tuition is easier to find. ** our 2020 kid only applied to auto merit scholarships; not competitive ones. we were slightly surprised that three schools (bama, arizon and miami of ohio) came back with extra $ that he didnt apply for and it isnt on their gird; it just showed up in his portal. Keep that in mind; places might up their game a bit in a few months.
Have you applied to Mississippi State? They literally threw $$ at my student to attend, it was painful to turn down their offers. If their Business School had been ranked higher nationally, my student would’ve gone there in a heartbeat…we loved that campus!
Thank you! Yeah, I’m not expecting a full ride or anything, just hoping to have at least half of the room/board/fees/books covered. I plan to go to med school so I’m trying to avoid undergrad debt as much as I can.
I don’t, sorry. I know they have a Vet school.
What about University of Houston? They are opening a Med School (maybe it opened this year?). With your ACT, and the fact that they’re soliciting students for the new Med School, I would definitely apply to UH!
That being said, with Nov 1 on Monday, you need to have all your applications submitted by then.
That’s a big application deadline, and even if a school says they’ll still accept applications after, you are pushing it. Housing may be an issue if you don’t pay deposits, only limited number of scholarships are offered, etc. It definitely won’t pay to apply at the last minute. Especially with the large universities, it is always best to be among the first.
Make sure you’ve filled out FAFSA, too. And reach out to local recruiting offices for the schools you like the most, explain the need for $$ and long term goals-can’t hurt.
But get those applications submitted…like TODAY!
I’m at a marching competition no can do. I’ll definitely crack down on those tomorrow. Hopefully it won’t be too late. I’ll look into Houston, thank you!
Excellent scores. Did you apply to UT Dallas? They give good scholarships and really like high test scores. Excellent med school acceptance rates, as well.
I considered applying for a while but heard some things about it being one of the saddest colleges and the fact that scholarships are a bit of a crapshoot for some people. I originally wanted to major in computer science before I decided it was a terrible idea for premed and that I didn’t enjoy computers much anyway.
