Texas Tech Honors College/School of Medicine

Have a son that is wanting to pursue a career in medicine. Looking at LAC's like Trinity and Sothwestern, along with the Big 12 Schools for pre-med. Any opinions on Tech's Honors College? S is a junior, 4.O, 1 or 2 in class 2060 SAT as Sophomore, plenty of EC's. Chance of meaningful merit scholarships?

My son graduated from Tech’s Honors College last year. I am almost at a loss for words on what an extraordinary and caring place the Honors College is from Dean Gary Bell to various faculty members to the staff itself. They were there for my son not only through the good times but also for a rough patch in his senior year. The Dean and staff were genuine friends and a “support network” for him.

Dean Bell is very imposing before a group of parents and prospective students as well as in person. And there’s a strength of character and commitment to undergraduates that’s the real McCoy. A staff person at the Honors College “put in a good word” for my son at a major corporation which ultimately led to his working there now.

Please visit Tech’s campus and the Honors College next year with your son and see for yourself. Be sure to talk to faculty and staff (including dropping into their offices) and draw your own conclusions. It is everything and more that the literature on the Honors College website portrays.

I am a graduate of the University of Chicago but I recruit for Tech’s Honors College now at high school college fairs in our Texas city because I have come to believe strongly in its “good story to tell”.
