My S has been accepted to both Texas and Baylor and we are out of state. He wants to study pre-med and go on to medical school. I know Texas doesn’t have a “pre-med” major but Baylor does (it’s one of the few schools that does have a “pre-med” major which is the main reason he applied there). I also know that he can major in anything he wants and still go to medical school as long as he takes the required courses for medical school.

So, I guess I have 2 questions:

Which school would be best for going on to medical school?

Could anyone give me a little comparison of the 2 schools?

He has visited the UT campus but he hasn’t visited Baylor/Waco.

Of course you will get differing opinions but that is what you want I guess. This is just my view, so if people disagree, I don't want to get into an argument. I will respect your point of view.

I think UT is just better academically.

I doubt you will get very many responses from people who have actually "attended" both schools. If your son liked/loved Austin, then he will probably be a little disappointed with Waco. Austin is a little more diverse (considering the size of UT and the population of Austin). Baylor is a Baptist university, so generally a bit more conservative. I think Baylor has a nice campus, but I do not find Waco to be that attractive. Austin and the Hill Country are beautiful, but the traffic is just awful.

Does pre-med really matter that much? How about Biology or Biochemistry?

Thanks for your reply - and I think you are right on both counts. For the record, my husband and I both attended UT so our S basically grew up a Longhorn! I just didn't want him to rule out Baylor without having all the info he could get. Plus I am a little concerned about him getting "lost" at UT since it's so big.

Pre-med doesn't matter that much. You could basically major in any subject (music, math, art, - anything) as long as you take the required courses for med school. Are there counselors now that will help you decide what courses to take based on your goals?

Go to Texas for Premed and Baylor for Medical school.. baylor premed students don't hold anything over texas premed students when being considered for med school

There is a reason that most schools don't have a pre-med major and that is because it is not necessary. I'm assuming Baylor is more expensive. Austin is definitely a better location (cost of living is more). I would definitely choose UT.
