Ive been accepted to the Business Honors Program and (hopefully the communications school once I get there) at the University of Texas and also the communications and/or economics at Stanford University. Texas would be significantly cheaper compared to Stanford, and I was wondering if it is worth the value.

I know Stanford does not technically have an undergraduate business program, but is their economics comparable to the undergraduate business program at Texas? Are there as many internship opportunities and similar course work? I've also been told many many times that your undergraduate film/journalism degree means very little in the industry, but is the name recognition of your alma mater important at all?

I was just wondering how highly regarded Texas' business and communications programs are outside of the state and if you have heard much about their students in comparison to similar students at Stanford. I know Texas does not have the same name recognition as Stanford, but does this matter much in the real world?

(I'm just terribly afraid that I might be throwing away an amazing oportunity at Stanford should I choose UT!!!)

I’m the biggest UT fan you’ll find outside of Austin, and I’ve many friends who go to both schools so I’ll attempt to answer your question sufficiently.

I think you’d rather do Econ here. The cost is something you and your parents will have to figure out. If you’re thinking about taking loans, I will always suggest go where your future will be the least inhibited by your financial situation. If you’re not, then that’s something you and your parents will have to decide. In any case, if you plan on staying in Texas, UT is well worth the value – especially McCombs. If not, I’d give the edge to Stanford.

Coursework/Curriculum? Not comparable. Econ here is much more theoretical and math based – especially the higher level classes. Definitely as many internships though. McCombs is known for Accounting, so if you want to go into that field…

I’ve no idea about the journalism industry.

McCombs is well regarded outside of Texas, but regional preference usually wins out with things like that(I wouldn’t expect McCombs to open doors for you in DC,NYC,Boston). Stanford is well regarded anywhere. The real world is a funny place. At this level, doing well wherever you go is a much larger predictor of how well you’ll do when you get out, not where you go.

Good luck with whatever you decide – this is a choice many would love to make.

well, over the course of my four years at school, UT would cost about $28,000 while Stanford would cost about $75,000…

Especially since I’m looking at business/economics simply as a good background and my true passion is in getting internships and jobs in the media industry (which don’t exactly pay all that well) I’m not sure if it’s very smart to take on that much debt…
