What is this team like? Are they a good group of girls? I am looking to walk-on to the rowing team.

Go for it! Knew one awhile back. It is tough and time consuming, but what a great experience.

I believe it! If I get in, I’m definitely going to try out!

My girlfriend is on the team. It’s a huge commitment. Practices are Monday-Saturday mornings ~6-8. During spring break and at the end of long holidays, practices are twice a day (essentially full time). Being able to make morning practices requires going to sleep early and missing out on a lot of night time activities (including Friday night). Away races involve being out of town half of the week, Thursday-Sunday. That being said, it’s also a hugely rewarding experience. This is an NCAA experience, not just some club activity. That means UT invests in you heavily with free gear, food, travel expenses, specialized tutoring/advising/priority registration and more. You will be a student-athlete, almost equal parts each. If you stick with it, the team will pretty much define your UT experience. You’ll probably make lifelong friends out of the girls you race with. Again, this is not some club to burn your spare time on. It’s bigger than that.

As a senior near graduation, I can tell you that many of the most important things I’ve learned in college were far removed from the classroom. What you learn out there on the water, working as a team, fighting and struggling alongside (and sometimes against) each other – it’s an indispensable life experience. You’ll enjoy it, and you’ll also grow from it.

Tryouts start near the beginning of the year. It’s a grueling process, but if you make it to the end then you’re on the team. Easy as that
