It's that time of year again! My child got the ISBN list from her bookstore source and I am trying to buy the books online as cheaply as I can. I thought I had a great deal at Barnes and Noble online- for workbooks that you can't really buy used- 3 day free shipping, save an extra $10 if you use Paypal (expires midnight tonight Sept. 5th, I have the code if anyone wants it)- but Barnes and Noble is completely sold out of every workbook that we need. So now I'm off to try Amazon and Half.com. I'm particularly determined to get the math book- lists for $140 ouch! Any other good tips? List them here, or PM me.

Here is a thread on textbook buying: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=376345&highlight=books

B&N ships free to their stores for in-store pick-up. (Not applicable for sabooks' workbooks, but that may be useful for others.)

Unfortunately, a book that was in-stock when I ordered it a month ago turned out to get sold out before it was delivered to the store and nobody told me, despite calls to the store and assurances that it would be delivered "any day."

Fortunately, the publisher sold it directly at BELOW THE B&N DISCOUNT PRICE. Books in the Prentice-Hall / Pearson Education family of textbooks can be purchased individually and direct shipped to schools.

Anyone else have luck finding the Sadler-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop Level G book? It's a tiny little thing with an outrageous price. Used at almost every school we've been to. D'yerMaker- that's a great tip! I'm going to check it out. Even my kid is getting into the spirit this year- her very rich friend bought everything new (over $800!) and sent them home with us because her locker didn't work. So I'm busy researching all of the ISBNs. Unfortunately the honors classes have lots of add ons.

D'yer Maker- you are a genius. $9.80 on their site. $45.00 everywhere else!

D'yer's earned his keep for another term! :)

We have always purchased an extra set of textbooks in middleschool so that our children would not have to trash their Backs toting them back and forth to school. We have done this for BS as well. This is done because it can be a problem if your child forgets his/her text across country for the holidays. I believe we used e-bay for most of the books. My MX D buys all used books for school.

prepparent--what a fabulous idea! My college D has what may be a permanent shoulder injury from carrying a 25 pound backpack full of books during middle school.

My S is more mathematical and weighs his backpack frequently to announce how many excess pounds he is carrying! (I believe 10%-12% of your weight is the max.)

I tried to get the our children's Middle School to allow the kids to have a rolling back pack. They would not allow rollers because of the damage to the floors. This is a high priced private school. problem number 2.......the kids thought it was too "geeky"....... Dad's issue was the postural defaults that become potential permanent issue's to the NMS system

Yay! Credit for the Sadlier-Oxford find goes mostly to Google. It was the top hit...with just some minor navigating in the site to that link. I wasn't confident that I had the right item because who complains about a $10 book?

Now, how about challenging us to find a deal on the math book. Give us some specifics.

AS FOR PURCHASING EXTRA TEXTS: With my S it wasn't a posture thing. It was a blood pressure thing. For me. We got extra books in some courses to eliminate the crises that ensued from S not having the books at home to do the homework.

D is coming home with a friend's copy of the math book today so I can research it! ;-) I bought the middle school books on Half.com to eliminate the backpack problem, also the spacey child forgetting the book problem. Here's the pitiful part- our public school system uses books that are so outdated that none of them cost over $3 used! And the younger children are now using them.

How does free sound for a text book deal? Doesn't get much better. We actually got that deal on history book yesterday at the school bookstore for my D. We hit the book store early to try to avoid the rush and the people behind the counter had some used copies of books for a few of the classes that they were giving away. I'm honestly not sure why. They were clearly used and probably more used than the "used copies" being sold, but they were not used beyond the point of usefulness. (How's that for a sentence?) My D had to take flags off a few pages, she will have to agree with (or ignore) underlining in a few sections and its not the most beautiful book to look at, but absolutely couldn't complain about the price.
