textbook question for eng-w 131!

The indiana textbook website says that I need 4 textbooks for my Eng-w 131 writing composition class! that seems like a lot. is this right?? current students who took this class please help!

Don’t buy the writer’s handbook, never used it. You rarely use the Writing Analytically, that’s where the assigned readings come from, but because you don’t take actual tests, only writing assignments, you don’t have to have it. But you definitely need the RAW essays book, that’s where the articles you must write your papers about come from.

when do you buy textbooks? before class starts or after? and where do I get the list of textbooks needed? sigh I’m new to all this.

smile–it’s up to you when you purchase your textbooks. You can go into onestart somewhere and connect to the IU bookstore to find out what books you need, or at least what has been reported so far. I believe TIS has a similar system set up. You need to know your course numbers and sections. In both places you can preorder textbooks. DD and I will spend some time this weekend finding her least expensive options for books. In some instances it’s a packet of readings that is not widely available.

Smile: I would suggest buying them before, because it will most definitely be cheaper and it will be easier to order from half.com or amazon.

wow, thanks so much!

One last question:

One of my scholarships can go towards book fees, however IU has the money at the moment. How would I work that out?

Go to [Chegg.com - Cheap Textbook Rentals. Search for Used Textbooks and Rent College Textbooks at Chegg.com.](http://www.chegg.com)
Cheapest you’ll find textbooks; and you don’t have to worry about selling them back.

The money that can go towards books, will most likely be credited towards your bursar account, and if your scholarship money is greater than your tuition and fees, than the surplus money will be refunded to you, and you can use that for books (or really whatever you want). But all the money will go on your bursar first.

I took W131 at my high school, and we had to have the Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum book as well as Writing Analytically. I recommend getting the Writing Analytically book even if the book isn’t an absolute necessity, because it has a lot of good tips for writing papers in college and you can use it as a reference. One of my friends who graduated a year before me took her WA book with her to college and said she still uses it. I plan on taking mine with me.

Nice going on taking W131 in high school. That is the cheapest way to take IU courses, unless you have scholarships.

haha thanks. I was exempt from taking it, but I had already signed up for it and figured that I might as well get credit for it if I was taking it anyway. Maybe I should have just taken the exemption, but what’s done is done.

My son did the same thing. Took W131 in high school, then got exempt through the SAT. His scores were high enough to get 2 credits also for W143. You need 670 or higher verbal; and 660 or higher on the writing section to get the two free credits. You can call the English department at (812)855-1430 and the credits will show up on your transcript a couple of weeks after you call.

How do I know if I am exempt from the composition requirement?
If you have achieved one of the following test scores, you have fulfilled the English composition requirement and will be exempted from it without credit:

* SAT (recentered) Verbal score of 670 or higher; or

 • ACT English score of 32 or higher; or

 • AP Program English: Composition and Literature score of 4 or 5; or

 • AP Program English: Language and Composition score of 4 or 5.

If you have achieved one of the above test scores AND you scored 660 or higher on the SAT II: Writing Test, you are exempt from the English composition requirement, and are eligible to apply for 2 credit hours in English W143 with a grade of S (satisfactory). Please call (812)855-1430 to request this special credit.
