If a textbook is suggested by the bookstore, but not required, does my son need it?

There’s only one textbook required for Math 53 and that is the 6th edition of Stewart’s Multivariable Calculus. Is the suggested book the student’s solution manual?

It says Calculus Mutlivariable (SSM). Is that the solution manual?

SSM stands for Student Solution Manual. It tells you how to solve every single problem in the book so it’s quite useful when you’re stuck and don’t know how to start the problem. Most people don’t opt to buy it since the textbook has the answers for odd-numbered problems.

Okay, thanks. Happy 4th of July! :-)

Make sure you buy the right Math 53 textbook as well since it’s a custom edition. My GSI is very picky about the specific edition and would not advise using an older edition since it may have problems ordered differently, which leads to conflicts when trying to assign homework.

Thank you, 187. Good tip!
