When will a student know what textbooks they need for each class? Are there any used textbook stores near Drexel?

OK, my son just found the listing of his classes and then was directed to the Barnes and Nobel On-line book store. Is this the best way to purchase books for Drexel?

The total he came up with was $1300…is this going to be the aprox. textbook cost per Quarter? Ouch!!

Schedules are finalized beginning of September; classes/books can change up until then.
That’s the cost/quarter for new books. Used via Amazon or other websites online will be cheaper.

Atlantic, any other recommended websites besides Amazon for used books?

I’ve heard half.ebay.com mentioned before but I really wouldn’t know firsthand. Personally, I’m going to use Amazon and see how that works out…Drexel is on the quarter system to freshman year there’s 3 chances to try different textbook options; see which one is most cost effective.

I know the urge of wanting to get all your textbooks before classes start, I would recommend waiting until classes start. During the first week of classes professors will go over the syllabus and what is expected. Some might mention the fact that they don’t really use the textbook, or that they will put up all their lecture slides online… meaning you won’t ever get to use the textbook. For other classes you might find out that getting an older edition will suffice (the difference in prices can be astounding).

If you have to get textbooks, try getting used ones from abebooks. Many textbooks also have “international editions” published for use in India, China, etc. The content is identical but they are much cheaper. They’ll usually pop up in abebooks too. Another place to get textbooks is at amazon, they have a used book marketplace.

Finally, some friends have recommended renting books for the term. Chegg is one site that comes to mind that a lot of people use. Good luck!

PS: I used to spend $400+ on books each semester. Now it’s more like ~$20-100.

Thanks martin.corn, he has ordered a few books already through amazon and half bay already…maybe he should have waited. I will let him know to wait on the others until he attends his first classes. Your $400 sounds much better than the $1300 quoted though the Drexel bookstore.
