Parent here. Does any one know if there are any scholarships for textbooks, for freshman ? I just have the feeling that even with a good budget estimate for first year expenses, it's going to cost more than we thought!

Check your university/college bookstores. I know my college's bookstore have annual scholarships for incomming frosh and even a raft for a new laptop (chances are slim to none..but i can still hope lol). Also, try and get the USED books. They cost about 25% less, according to my school.

If you can get the ISBN of the books your kid will need a few weeks before classes, you can often get them cheaper through online sites like half.com than used from their college bookstore.

Definitely look at half.com and overstock.com for books. We have bought most of my son's science textbooks through half.com and many of my son's history paperback books at overstock. Also consider buying international copies of textbooks but make sure they are exactly like the original US book. I resell all the books my S doesn't want to keep through half.com. The key is getting the book listing (with ISBN's) in order to buy the books in plenty of time for classes. The school book store is very expensive even for used copies.

Wentz Textbook Awards are designed to assist non-traditional and transitional students cover the cost of textbooks and supplies to help them achieve their educational and career goals.
