No Bloomy.

So if I can’t send books to S at Tulane until I know his box #, how are people ordering books? To their home to transport to Tulane??? I guess I will wait until we know a box # - should come this week?

Hi all. Starting to get nervous here that I have not looked into any of this yet, so here I am obsessively catching up on all of your posts! Question…are you planning on buying new or used? I remember back in the days of the dinosaur when I was in college, you went to the book store and looked through the used books to find the ones with the least amount of writing and highlighting in them. Some were practically new and some were filled with yellow, pink and blue. So, if you blindly order used, how do you know what you are getting? Can you return it if its too marked up?

My friend says that buying the books in advance could be a waste, since sometimes the profs change the book requirements. Her kids waiting until school started to buy/rent the books.

Thoughts from experienced parents?

I think that happens pretty rarely these days, since the profs post the book requirements ahead of time. Might be different at other schools. I know my D (and my S at another school) always bought their books ahead (usually used on Amazon when possible) and never had an issue. Have to be a little careful about how long it would take to get the books after attending the first class. Don’t want them to fall behind.

Especially this first semester, I would have them come in prepared by having the books already. Once they have a semester under their belts, they can better know how best to proceed in the future. The possible extra money from one or two book changes, unlikely as they are, would be a pretty small amount relative to everything it will cost over 4 years.

D2 said EBio books aren’t posted yet. Same with other courses. Is this true?

If you order books on Amazon they can’t arrive before the 19th, right?

Now that you have his box number, you can go ahead and send them. He can pick them up at the post office when he arrives. Just keep a list of all the books that Amazon says we’re shipped so he can make sure he got them all by checking them off as he unpacks them.

OK great. That will be one thing to check off the list!!!

More textbook questions. I went on Amazon to look at the Intro to French package - Vis a Vis, Amon. Unfortunately, the ISBN number doesn’t match up to the number posted in the Tulane Bookstore listing, even though the edition (5th) is the same. Also, I can’t figure out if the package includes more than the textbook and workbook. There is a huge price discrepancy. The new package at the bookstore is over $400, used if available is $300. S can rent the textbook from Amazon for under $60 and buy the workbook for $87. Any advice? And is it really not a problem to send the books now? S is doing NOLA Experience and the instructions he received are pretty restrictive as to what can be sent ahead of time.

Well, I suppose if Tulane specifically says not to send things to the PO Box before a certain date, I would pay attention to that, although we never had any issues about it.

Regarding the French books, it could be that the bookstore bundled some books together and gave the bundle a unique IBSN. We saw that with some of my D’s Chinese courses.

Aquamom, that’s also why I asked. I think it says nothing should arrive before the 14th? I’ll look again.

OK, so this year it is the 14th? That should be no problem. If you order on the 12th they will get there in plenty of time. I mean, that’s about 3 weeks before classes start. Am I missing something?

Aquamom, just FYI, my son at another school has to have an online access code for his german class. He is able to get the online access at the publishers website for three semesters, with the full text online, for a quarter of his bookstore price.

I think you will need online access for french as well and this is not included in the textbook alone. It is also not included in used books. I have sometimes found an unused access code for sale and then have bought the book and workbook used.

Some of the professors require the online access for homework assignments, so if your son needs this, you can purchase this separately at the publisher later. (If you have already bought the other two).
