Textbooks

nem ~ that certainly is frustrating. So your book list is separate from the general registration course listing? At S’s school, there is a link to the books required for a course right with that course listed on the complete roster of courses offered (by subject) for the semester.

kitty, I am unaware of such a list. I have access to my in son’s internal information. It lists the classes that he is registered for, but not the books. There is bookstore website and it has a link to required textbooks. When one clicks this, it only shows required books for the fall semester. I called the bookstore and they told me that they will not post textbook information for the spring until fall finals are completed.

I know with my S, he waits until he has had his first class. Every semester so far he has had at least 1 class that on the first day gave them a different list of books (some less, some more, some just different).

Then, of course, cheap as he is - he asks around to see if anyone already has books he can borrow. This semester, he is sharing one book with a friend (same easy class two different meet times), borrowed two, bought a lit novel used and only had to buy 1 book and some software.

You can see if the professor listing for the course in the fall is the same one as the prof listed for spring…if so, order same book as was used in the fall.

^ Professor names are not listed. Sections are listed only. I am thinking of taking a chance though and ordering books where all the sections were using the same book in the fall. For classes offered only in the spring, I will need to wait for them to post. I hope that I am not wasting money trying this.

That might or might not work. My DH is a professor and he may find that the book he originally chose does not work as well as he wanted, or he may find a less expensive book that accomplishes the same thing, or a new edition may come out that is better, etc. So he may change the book for the next semester.

nem ~ oh I see. Wow. That makes it tough. S’s school has the complete course listings going back to 2006 for every semester that anyone can access. You can no longer see the books required for the current or older semesters, but as the ones for next semester are added, anyone can see that if they click on the books link for the course.

We have always had good luck on:

[Half.com: Textbooks , Books , Music , Movies , Games , Video Games](<a href=“Electronics, Cars, Fashion, Collectibles & More | eBay”>http://www.half.ebay.com/)

I have actually sold some of the D’s from Freshman Year on here & gotten some bucks back, quite a surprise actually! No need to take a photo of the book either, so much easier than selling something on Ebay. Half deposits profit into our checking account.

kitty, I know, that’s the risk of ordering the fall book. The whole thing is really annoying to me.

I enjoy “competitive shopping” so I told DS1 that I would order his first semester books. I saved > $400. One book ended up not being needed (the online homework package included the ebook), but still a very worthwhile savings.

Has anyone opened an AmazonMarketplace account to sell back books? I would like to hear any recommendations on how that works.

So far I have puchased two books which have been listed online. We think one more of his 16 hours may add a book. If not, we will get by spending less than $50 for books this semester.

S school.actually posts the lists on their bookstore website. Makes it easy to find what to buy.

If you don’t want the hassle of selling through AmazonMarketplace, go to BookFinder.com ([Sell textbooks and used books - Buyback comparison @ BookFinder.com](Sell textbooks and used books - Buyback comparison @ BookFinder.com)). Enter the ISBN, and you’ll get a list of bookstores (Amazon, textbooks.com, etc.) and what they’re offering to pay you for the book. Some pay cash, but Amazon only gives you a gift card. That’s fine with me, because I do a lot of shopping on Amazon.
