also, when should i start getting my textbooks?

You are probably going to be using those books for multiple quarters. I thought renting my books was the smarter/better way of doing it,but what I found was that renting it for two quarters ended up costing me as much as or more than buying used. I would say IMO the best route is to just buy used. If you are going to buy from the textbook store just limit it to used or ucla custom books. If you can find the same edition online, used just go with that. Ive had to buy my books for school for 8 years and from my experience it is a complete rip off to buy new. Try searching for your book on directtextbook.com I think you would want your book by the end of first week. A lot of people wait until after class starts to buy their books because sometimes the prof may say certain books are optional. But in your case you are definitely going to need your math and chem books

Buy your books NOW! And then read them as much as possible before class even begins. For example, in your math/chem books - by simply reading through the material (not necessarily understanding it along the way), you dramatically increase your chances of understanding when the course actually begins, because you will have already been exposed once.
