Textbooks

I have read on this forum that you can save significant $$$ buying used textbooks online or renting them. A few questions:

1) Do most Furman students go through the B&N run bookstore on campus to get books or do they take advantage of the online sites like half.com or amazon?

2) If you do get them online, what is the best way to get the ISBN for the class (ie. call bookstore, email professor, etc...)

3) When does one get their schedule so you know what books you will need. It seems that you dont really know until advising during Orientation or is it online earlier? Just trying to figure logistically if there is enough time to get books before the classes start!

Any advice would be helpful!

Don’t email the professor! Do you think he or she wants 30 different emails to this effect?
Wait until you get there and then do either overnight or two day shipping after you know which classes you are taking for sure.

srockrae-There is a link in the student’s webadvisor that takes you to their schedule ( as it currently is) and you can choose either the access to the schedule alone or the schedule with the bookstore link. This feature began, I believe, when Barnes and Noble took over the Furman bookstore.

Since a lot of students change classes once they meet with their advisor, I would encourage you to wait until the first day of class and see what the professor requires. There have been courses our kids have taken where the professor will tell students it is not necessary to buy the book, or give kids an online log-in. FWIW, our two actually rented some textbooks last year ( for classes not in their major) and seemed perfectly pleased. If you need recommendations for other places to buy books, feel free to contact me. Good luck to all of you!

Your best bet is just buying the textbooks in the bookstore for the first semester then the next 7 do as you please.

Yeah Furman has classifieds in FirstClass. However, many people buy and sell books from each other at the end of the semesters, not the beginning… So rarely do Freshmen get to participate. You can check classifieds though under “textbook exchange”.
