i suggest renting books, but if you want to buy from the bookstore you can order them and just pick up a box with all your stuff in it on a certain date

Since you have time now before classes start (and also at winter break), I would shop around online and look for the best prices before heading to the bookstore. I got mine a lot cheaper via ebay, amazon, and even barnes and noble online. I did buy a couple of the overseas versions and didn’t have any problems at all using them (calculus, C for engineers and scientists). It saved about a hundred dollars on the calculus book. The books are paperback instead of hardcover and have a different picture on the cover.
My best deal yet - ‘The Worlds of Medieval Europe’ for Medieval Studies class -
bought used for 21.99 on ebay and sold back to Amazon (through Trade-Ins) for $20.25.

@Hella: UCD DOES do rentals, but not on all of their books.

@mytime09: To view the textbooks for your classes, go to sisweb.ucdavis.edu, then click Student Services and Financial Aid -> Registration -> View and Order Textbooks. I would recommend finding the textbooks online, as you can almost always get them much cheaper than you can at the bookstore. Amazon Marketplace often has very good deals on textbooks, but make sure you order them well in advance, as some sellers can take a while to ship them to you. The bookstore will be VERY busy during the first week, so be prepared for that if you have to go there–and you most likely will need to to get UCD branded lab notebooks and things like that.

Regarding international versions: They are often good, since they save you a ton of money. But be careful with them, particularly for classes where there will be problems assigned from the text and not just reading. One international version I had had different numbers for some of the problems. So, if you do get one of these, I’d recommend checking a sample set of problems against a U.S. version before doing any assignments from it.
