Is now the time to get textbooks? I read somewhere that some professors have their own requirements regarding the texts, so I’m not sure if I should go hunting for deals and getting my books now. Also, which sites/vendors do you usually go to? I’ve heard of the UCD bookstore, Chegg, Half, and then of course there’s ebay, amazon… What would you recommend? Thanks ^_^

I’m using [this site](http://www.slugbooks.com/)–it tells you whether a book is required or optional for a class (for example, the textbook for my ANS 001 class is optional), and compares prices between the UCD bookstore, Amazon, half.com, Chegg, and eBooks. They also have listings from Facebook users who are willing to sell their book.

i recommend rentals just because if you’re going to use a book for 3 months it doesn’t make sense to buy it

If it’s a book for a series, or one that you anticipate being a good reference in the future, it makes sense to buy it. Usually, Amazon Marketplace has pretty good deals on new and used copies from a variety of sellers. They also have a buyback program now, which will give you Amazon credit.

@sopranokitty: thank you! that is a really helpful link. and I didn’t know that it would actually say a book could be optional, either.

I checked it out, and the only thing I’m sad about is my MGT 11A option - only the UCD bookstore is open, because the text is a UCD Special Edition or something and isn’t available anywhere else, apparently. I really didn’t see that one coming XD

@Hella: oh hey, that’s pretty good. I hadn’t even looked at it that way. thanks for the tip!

@jonline: thanks! also something I hadn’t considered. I’ll definitely look into that.

thank you again for all your help!

I’m not sure that this is always the case, but the UCD special edition physics books for the 9 series just omit some chapters that aren’t taught. That might be something worth checking into, if you can find the normal edition of the text for much cheaper.

it’s really up to you. you can either buy them now or after you get the class syllabus saying which texts are required for the quarter.
