I found what could possibly be my Calculus and Physics textbooks, but I am unsure if they are the correct ones, if they have changed at all, and I really have no idea to what books are required for the other courses. Does anybody have any clue?

Okay I did a rudimental book search for you:

Calc 1/2/3 all use the same book (from what I recall): “Essential Calculus” by Stewart [9781133425908]
Chem 1/2 should use the same book: “Chemistry: Atoms First” by Burdge/Overby [9780077760021]
Physics 1/2 should use the same book: “Fundamentals of Physics” by Halliday [9781118468449]
Intro to Pysch: “Psychology” by Ciccarelli [9781256812944]
Engr 1/2 use the same book: “Introduction to Engineering Analysis” by Budny [no ISBN get the newest edition that is out]

It’s kind of convenient because you go step by step through your classes, but the format they show the books in is AWFUL. It used to just be a big document that you could search through for your class with all the book information…this is just a mess. Anyway, you’ll need all your books, so I recommend hitting up Amazon or Half.com etc to buy them used/cheap.

If all this still confuses you, email your professor and ask them exactly what books/additional things you may need (I never used the CDs that came with books, for instance) and the ISBN number of said books.

The pitt bookstore sells special pitt copies for Psych (or at least my class did, although they were just selected chapters from another book) I am pretty sure they do the same thing with halliday as well.

Awesome - buying textbooks off half.com and amazon this yr but for those textbooks written by Pitt profs (and you are forced to purchase - ha!) is there anywhere besides the pitt bookstore to find those? I had thought there was a used-book store on campus somewhere, but my dear ds doesn’t have a clue. Any words of wisdom?

There was but it’s gone. Closed down I believe. So I believe the bookstore is the only place to buy it unfortunately.

Also, word to the wise: THE PITT BOOKSTORE HAS CHANGED LOCATIONS. IT IS NOW ON FORBES AVENUE AT THE ATWOOD INTERSECTION. They’re renovating the Towers location this year and it will re-open next year back at the original location. There are rumors of a coffee shop being installed!

Agreed. Luckily I only ever had to deal with one who published through the university. The book itself was awful quality (think a HUGE paper back book) that cost $127. >_<
Luckily in Graduate school we don’t seem to have this problem!

I, too, have the same classes (you’re engineering as well I assume) and had concerns about these books. When found with the Pitt Book Center site, all have something extra added to the name, usually an ebook or some type of access code. I looked on a few sites (Amazon, Chegg, Textsbooks, Slugbooks, Half) and wasn’t sure if they would come with these extras. Here’s the list I have worries about.

Unless the curricula has seriously changed, the add-ons are not a required part of the class for the first year. Generally, the only things on the CD are extra questions to work on, or powerpoints/additional information that you can just as easily find by yourself on the web.

If you want to double check, though, just email your professor and ask if you have to get the package, or if you can just buy the book elsewhere.

I made a mistake when ordering my daughters textbooks at the PITT book center. I ordered used books when possible and apparently didn’t check “if used books not available replace with new”. The book store ran out of the books and it may take 3 weeks to get new ones. Now my D has no text books for Biology 150 and no study guide for Chemisty 110. I spoke to a few people at PC and they said this happens and it’s no big deal. Well, I am very worried, should I be, what should she do, will this impact her grade, etc. Help, advice, etc.

I am assuming you can cancel your order with Pitts bookstore? If your dd can give you the ISBN # for the texts - it’s on my.pitt (if they aren’t written by Pitt profs that is!) you can go look on Amazon for those texts - I was able to buy new at Pitt bookstores “used” price. You can also sign her up for Amazon prime - membership gives you 2day free shipping and is free for students for 6 mo. ($39/yr after that) - (so you can use it for less than 6 mo. as long as you cancel before that 6 mo. date - it will be free). You can also ck half-dot-com or chegg for textbooks but I found Amazon pretty competitive. I actually did all the looking around for my ds’ textbooks and forgot to get one - just ordered it yesterday and it’ll be there Wed.
