Son plans on buying his books online. Is there some place to find out what books he needs without going to the bookstore? Can you call the bookstore for that information? His Poli Sci prof e-mailed the class with the book information. Do many profs do that?

Peggy, did you try the online bookstore? There is a list of them at http://www.onsp.umich.edu/about/bookstores.html . Then you can just compare title, author, and edition with those on sites like Amazon. Also, if he logs into ctools.umich.edu some courses have the textbooks listed with ISBN.

Im pretty sure most campus bookstores like Ulrich's maintain a list of the books which a particular section uses. You can call in advance and find out.

If you've registered for classes , C Tools will have some of your Textbook Information. Alternatively , you could go to the Department Website and search for Textbook Information. e.g: I know the Econ Department has a list of textbooks for various sections on their website. If you check classes on the course guide, some have TB info there.

Or you could email your professor and ask:)
Oh and I hear whywaitforbooks.com is pretty decent too.

The union bookstore has a tool for finding the books needed. Then you can compare the prices online. I used www.cheapesttextbooks.com to find the prices.

where do you look on ctools?

It only works if your professor for that class has a ctools site set up. You can also try finding a course webpage through either the department or the professor's webpage.
