Textbooks

Where do we look to find out which textbooks to purchase for my daughter's classes?

Go to mywm, click the myWMhome tab (in the upper left under the 4 pictures of campus).

There is a Resources section on the left side of the resulting page. Under Student Services is W&M bookstore. Just click that, and another screen will pop up. There will be a tab saying "buy your textbooks on line today". Go through what it tells you to do (basically look up your classes), and you will get a complete book list, each book shows the ISBN number you will need. Then go to Half.com and buy them...lol.

At UVa, students can get their books at the Bookstore and pay for them as a "Student Charge." The bill goes straight home to the parents. Is there an equivalent procedure at W&M or do I have to give my kid my credit card?

You can either give them your credit card or put money onto their Express account and tell them to pay for the books with their Express.

I wouldn't recommend using Express. Last year for a few days Express was down during the days prior to the semester. A major credit card would be far more reliable.

if your child is responsible, I would consider getting their own credit card. The bill can be sent home. This is what I do. I only use my credit card for things my parents have previously agreed to pay for (books, groceries, etc). This way the child can start to build credit also.

You can also do WM Express.

Thanks for the advice. It is probably a little too late in the summer to apply for a credit card for my D. She has a Visa Buxx card, which I fund electronically, so I guess that's what we'll use. While I don't ordinarily say nice things about UVA -- I'm a Hokie -- I do like the Student Charge system they have in place. My other D can just pick up her books and have the bill sent to me.

Any thoughts on the average cost of books per semester? I want to make sure I put enough $$ on her card.

it really depends on the classes. My first semester I bought them from the the school bookstore it was around $400. This semester I had much cheaper books and it was only around $200. If you are going to buy them from the bookstore you can go online to the W&M bookstore, put in the classes and it will tell you the books that you need to buy. An easier way to do it would be to have the student go to banner > student registration > books. Then click the icon that is a bundle of books. It will take you to the W&M bookstore with all the books required for your schedule.

unfortunately, they can probably range anywhere from $200 to $700. Some professors take care to choose cheaper books, or fewer books and more handouts (or a packet you can pick up from the library). Usually this is with the social science classes, where they have more room to direct the class to their preference. In the other classes, you are probably stuck with the standard book. A calc book will probably set you back $200, as with a bio or chem book, especially if you buy the extra practice books.
