Textbooks

If we already know who our professors are, can we buy textbooks now? I went to their bookstore site and couldn’t find anything based off of teacher

It's probably too early to buy the majority of the textbooks, the bookstore is more likely to have stuff in stock for the summer sessions rather than fall quarter. Wait till September.. there won't be a crowd a week or two before classes start. The worst time to go to the book store is the day before classes start or the day of, but other than that it's fine. When you go to the bookstore you should bring a list of your classes with class number (like math 21a) and a section number (like A01) and professor. Sometimes the same class will be taught by different profs (different sections) who will want a different book.

Thanks! Is there any way we can check to see if they happen to have them now? I'm taking some hard classes and I'd like to try to get a jump start on them, if I can.

The best way would be to email your professors. They should be more than happy to release that info to you. Usually the book list is released on siscast.com a week or two before class starts.

Speaking of class materials, is it worth buying a recorder to use during lectures?

Do any current/former freshmen happen to know which textbook is used for Chem 002A?

Chem 2A uses "General Chemistry: Principles & Modern Applications" 9th ed. by Petrucci, Harwood, Herring and Madura

That edition only came out last year so I'm fairly sure there isn't an edition 10. Some students used ed. 8 this past year - the chapters are the same just different order.

Thanks. Is this the same for all Chem 2A classes, regardless of teacher?

usually use the same book every semester but perhaps with a newer edition. but i have use older edition as well. it works fine for me plus it is cheaper

hey guise

Digg - First It Was Song Downloads. Now It’s Organic Chemistry.

Haha, wow...

The bookstore doesn't post required textbooks online (although they really should, but I guess it would hurt their business). The only way you can find out before class starts is to contact the professor or go to the bookstore itself, which at this point is not stocked yet for fall.

And to the question about recorders...

No, it is not worth it to buy a digital recorder unless you're really excited about going back and listening to a boring two-hour lecture all over again. Take good notes, save yourself the time and money.

However, if you are taking some highly technical class where the professor talks fast and gives a lot of (mathematical) examples that you can't keep up with, I suppose a recorder would be helpful to go back and get anything you missed. But chances are you won't encounter many classes like that.

i think a person (not saying anyone here) would want a recorder also so that they can maybe skip class some days, and still get the materials down. which is pretty stupid, because you're paying for you're own education...seriously.

but if you're absent because of some unbeknown reason and you don't want a classmate to take notes for you/etc., it's a good idea to have a recorder ready too

If someone asked me to bring a recorder to class for them I would tell them to pull their lazy ass out of bed and go to class themselves.

some professors use to podcast and post the recordings online. Some don't because then students won't show up for class.

i really need to start ordering books online now
does anyone know when siscast is going to post the books?

btw, i have sabalka for math16a
