Is there anywhere online where I could find the books that are needed for classes? I would like to get them online, so I don't get ripped off by the Cornell Store again.

Barnes and Noble (even better if you have their membership card), Amazon, Half.com

Does anyone know when Fall 2008 books go on sale? I'm arriving early in Ithaca and would like to get a heads up :)

The list is posted 2 weeks before classes begin....books will definitely be on sale the week before...maybe sooner.

Look here to see past books offered for a particular course.

Another option (that is probably more current) is here: The Cornell Store for Faculty. Click textbook verification and then enter your netid.

or email professor.

I suggest half.com or ebay, they are cheaper than amazon/cornell store/barnes/borders

If you need textbooks that you can't find online, definitely go the Kraftees in college town to buy your books. They have all the books the Cornell store has and they purposely mark their prices at least 10% below the Cornell store.

Hi . Would someone from this past CALS bio science freshman class tell me which texts was used for bio 1 & 2, calc, & chem 1 & 2 ? thanks

sammy2, go up and read vivace13's post.

chem is petrucci 9th edition, bio is campbell newest edition, the red one with the leaf on it

would you recommend buying the edition previous to the one they require, in order to help save money?

Also, what about the extra "Media Kits" like MyMathLab and all that junk? Math 191 requires the Thomas Calculus 11, "Media Upgrade" that has MyMathLab, and I can buy a used 10th edition, minus "media upgrade" for somewhere around 15 bucks, as opposed to the 100+ for the required one. Is it worth it?

For some classes (191 included), buying a previous version isn't recommended since profs sometimes assign problems out of the textbook. These problems DO change from edition to edition. OTOH, the Media Kit thingy is pretty much worthless. Find an 11th edition or buy the 10th and do homework from the 11th edition (either find a friend or the library has a copy on reserve).

For classes where I thought the textbook would be useful to buy (mainly my biology and chemistry classes) I used abebooks.com. They often sell paperbacks and/or international editions (which is the same text and page #s) for really low prices. I think I bought my biochem and genetics textbook for about 40 bucks. You can't sell them back at the end of the year, but I wanted to keep them anyway.

I rarely bought the solutions manual that the professor wants you to buy. If the professor assigned problems out of the textbook, I would do them on my own time and then go check the answers at the library b/w classes at some point. Problems like these are rarely collected as homework, and if they are, you would usually have a week to do them.

For classes that have a course packet AND a textbook: i've found that the textbook is not really necessary. The professor will lecture from the course packet and the prelims will draw from the course packet as well. I've found that in order to save money, it was best to not bother buying the textbook, and just use it once or twice a week at the libe to catch up on the readings. If you are the type of person to skip out on lectures all the time, then of course you should buy the book.

i get them ebay, amazon, textbookw.com, textbook2u.com, etc

just bought a couples of book from this ebay store eBay Store - New and Used College Textbooks: cheap textbook, economics brue, principles of corporate finance

gonna buy more next weeks when i get my booklist

not really a textbook question but for orgo lab do you need a lab notebook? like the one used in general chemistry? the one with duplicate pages

yes you do

Amazon.com: Student Lab Notebook: 100 Spiral Bound duplicate pages: Hayden-McNeil: Books

those?

That's exactly what I had

has anyone taken psych101? the textbook listed seems to come in a 3pk and i was wondering if its okay to just order the textbook itself.
