so how and when do we find out what textbooks we need for our classes? and how and when do we buy them?

Im taking a class for session B summer and the professor actually emailed last week to let me know what text book to buy so I could save money online. I would try contacting your professor and they should let you know.

ok thanks :)

It really depends on the course. Freshman and soph year, I used to get my books the first day of class at the campus book store. Then I learned to wait to check the syllabus and see how much time I had before actually needing the book. If I had some time, I'd look for used books on Amazon. Even better, you can ask your professor if a copy can be put on reserve at the library. A lot will do it, and as long as you're cool with reading in 2 hour intervals and are responsible with doing so, then, of course, there's no charge. By my Junior year, I didn't buy many text books b/c all my profs put them in the library.

You never have to have read by the first class unless your prof sends out an email asking for it (even then, that's rare, because crashers wouldn't be on the mailing list). Check out the syllabus and see if you have time to bargain shop. If not, then hit up the bookstore.

so basically, just wait till i get the syllabus and i should be fine?

buy your textbooks at least a month in advance from a cheaper source. you WILL save a lot of $$$ if you do this.

ok i went to that website and was able to find books for all my classes except one..i'm taking sociology1 and there wasn't a textbook listed for that course..does that mean that i don't need a book for that class? because that seems very unlikely..i would think most courses have textbooks to go with the class. can anybody help me with my dilemma? thanks

i don't know what book(s) they will be using for sociology 1, and it is not beyond the scope of reality for a class not to use one. it all depends on whether there is a good book on the subject matter, or the instructor's way of teaching.

also, please keep in mind that for classes that have more than one required or optional textbook, then i advice you not purchase them ahead of time as they may actually not be used. you can always use your best judgment to censor may advice though, or contact the professor.

try emailing your professor couple weeks before class starts and ask for a syllabus ahead of time, or if they're not done with one for the following term then they or they will send you a copy of one from the previous term so you can then order your books ahead of time.
