I have a question about buying textbooks. I looked up the textbook sfor my classes on slugstore, and they have some that are recommended and some are required. Should I buy the recommended books? Because there are quite a few, would I end up needing them?

i would wait until you actually go to the class, then your teacher will probably tell you if you need additional textbooks or not.

Well, here's how it goes...at least for me and basically almost all of my friends and guys I know

There's classes where you NEED to have all the textbooks, there's classes where you sometimes use the textbook, there's classes where you almost never use the textbook, and there's classes where you basically never touch the textbook.

For example, for one of the classes I took, fundamentals to game design, or something like that, I bought the textbook for that class, a hardcover textbook that cost me like $100. I read the book for the first week of class or two, two chapters of it, when my friends and I (bunch of us taking the class at the same time) realized how useless the book is; everything essential to the course is covered by the lectures and the professor's powerpoint slides. I think I opened that book like 4 times. Got an A in the class.

Another example...CMPS 11A, or something like that...the first class in the computer science line. I had free access to the book (friend bought it and never read it), and I never opened the book. Got an A in the class.

A third example...MATH 11A. Bought the book, along with the "recommended" one, which is a workbook...or something. I opened the math book twice to do some assigned homework. Never opened the workbook.

And a fourth example in this category...writing 2. Professor required us to get two textbooks. We were only told to use the second textbook we "had" to buy once. Unfortunately, not only was the book useless to class, but the book itself was useless; my friend stopped reading it in like 2 minutes, and I eventually just gave up after maybe 20 minutes of reading.

And a scenario where having the book IS essential to passing the class. I took microeconomics...econ 1 or something. Professor sucked. Lectures useless. I'm not a ditcher; previously before college, the ONLY time I have ever ditched class from grade 1 to 12 was during senior ditch day. This guy...I ditched for like 6 weeks straight, coming in only to take his midterm and final. Got a B+ in the class. I learned -EVERYTHING- from the book.

Etc, etc. it can go on and on. you should talk to people who have taken the class before and ask them about the importance of having a particular textbook for a particular class and professor.
