Textbooks

So...I get the impression that everyone buys textbooks from the book store but it's super expensive! Is there a way for us to find out about textbooks and order it online? would that be cheaper/better? Or is it just more convenient to buy at the bookstore? How can we save our money on textbooks?

^^Definitely NOT true that everyone buys their books from the bookstore--you can save a lot of money by buying used online/from other Wellesley students. The bookstore makes books lists for each class available online, but obviously you need to know what classes you will be in. Last year (when I was an incoming first-year), I did buy some of my textbooks online after I registered for classes. I had to do an assignment or two from a library copy of the textbook, but it was worth it as I saved $60 on that book alone.

Wellesley's "For Sale" conference, which you will learn about during orientation, has a separate section for textbooks. The deals are usually excellent, and it's a good bet for courses that are offered often.

So do profs. understand that people who can't afford to buy all their textbooks during the first week of classes don't have their books for those first few classes? I mean obviously you still have to do all the work, but are those first couple weeks highly reading intensive? I had a friend who is a junior in college who had a class freshman year where the prof. basically expected them to read the textbook in like a week... but what if you don't have a copy of the textbook yet!???!?!? gahhh!!! I really wish we were able to register for classes over the summer, it seems like everyone I know already has their schedule and books and they've all started reading already... I hate feeling so behind! Even if I'm not at all by Wellesley standards... merrr.

Thanks for all the tips. :) If you have anymore that'd also be fabulous. ;D

onomatopoeia: Generally no. But it depends on the class. If it's a foreign language class you will probably need the book right away and will be using it in class every single day. If it's a class with lots of little novels or lots of little books, you will only need the first one, as the class will go through them in succession as reading. The course syllabus will probably tell you which books you don't need right away.

This will make no sense to you, but you can grab the course conferences as soon as you get firstclass by going to
Wellesley Conferences>Departments>Courses>(dept)>(course). Many course conferences are already in place, and some enterprising profs already have stuff up (eg. Math 225).
