Where can you check to see what books you'll need.

That's a good question. To the best of my knowledge, there is no master list of textbooks. Professors can change what books one should get and the edition used may change (to warn people who may want to buy books early). There are a number of bookstores, such as Ulrich's, Michigan Book and Supply, etc. that carry all the textbooks, organized by what class. Last year I pre-ordered all my books (preferring used ones over new) from Ulrichs (their website is just dot com added) and was able to pick them up a few days before classes began.

I would recommend one goes to the bookstore to find out what books they would need and the price, and find out if any upperclassmen have the books and would be willing to sell them to you. Returning books at the end of each semester usually net you 50% or less of the cost, so it's much better to get them from other students so long as the same book is used.

since books can suddenly change should i still go ahead and just pre-order them and then return them if anything changes? btw I will be gone the entire summer so I wont be able to buy them later.

You can go to one of the three main bookstores on campus the week before classes start and find out what books you need. You can then either buy them there or just find which ones you need and then order them online.

If you decide to buy at the stores, Ulrichs is best, MBS slightly worse, and Union a lot worse in terms of prices. Also, you'd better hope you don't have to get anything at Shaman Drum unless you like waiting in line for hours.
