Has anyone attempted to buy their textbooks yet? I mean, I've got my courses and ISIS has told me what books I need. Maybe we should start gettin at it.

Yeah, I have the same question...

Be careful in buying the books, ISIS does not give you the ISBN number so you don't know for sure what editions will need. Your best bet if you are trying to buy them cheap on amazon or half is to wait until the prof. puts the syllabus up on toolkit otherwise just get them at the bookstore when you get here

phew...good save.

you can get the isbn # by going to the UVA Bookstore's website. In their online textbook dept they have a huge list with all of the books for each class and it includes isbn/author/title etc.

I have been looking at the costs of some of these books...$$$...it is ridiculous.

I was cross-referencing the COD and the textbook list on the UVa bookstore when I noticed that the professors for some courses are not listed. As an example, for APMA 212, only professors for the first 3 sections are given. Does this mean that the remaining sections will not get fixed professors? Or gasp would these lectures actually be taught by TAs?

I'm not sure what you mean when I look up APMA 212 on the COD all 5 sections have instructors listed. Also remember that just because there is a name for the instructor that does not mean that a professor is teaching the course, that may be the name of the TA teaching the course as is the case for SPAN 101-202

Under all my courses it says "Textbooks for this course have not yet been identified." Does anyone else have no books listed?

You guys should have just purchased your books at orientation like I did. Just gave the guy my sched and he looked up all the books for me. I got them all.

Right, but you went to the bookstore and paid higher prices. You can get much better deals online with used books from half.com,etc.

True, but my books are covered under scholarship. lol

For my books, in ISIS, it says the courses do not have books listed yet. But then at the UVA library list, it has the books for the course. So should I follow UVA's bookstore and look for the books?

don't believe isis. this is the first year for the UVA booklist from the library (new VA state law requiring them to release the books in advance) so I don't know the accuracy of it yet. I'm not trusting enough of the list to drop down some serious money on books online, yet....

since you usually don't need books the first week or two of classes, I'll probably buy some online after going to class and knowing for sure what the prof wants. For any classes i'm unsure if I will keep or not, I'll probably buy the books from the bookstore (even though its more expensive) so then if I decide to drop the course, I can return the books up to two weeks after class starts. And then there are those courses that I will never even buy the books for, but instead go find an older edition in the library or for super cheap online.

The thing to remember is that books in college aren't like in highschool. They are really there only for your own benefit, many classes don't follow the order or material of the book at all. And new books differ very little from their older editions. Its hard to get a feel about what will be necessary, but after a semester or two, you'll get the hang of it and know when to buy the latest edition of a book, or when to search for an older edition and save major money.
