When buying books, should we buy the optional texts, or are they just going to be a waste of money? For Math20A, they have like 6 optional texts, so any advice would be appreciated! thanks :)

I would generally say no, but I guess it depends on the class.

The only optional texts I buy are study guides because they usually come with step by step ways to answer problems…

xpenguin,
study guides for what type of courses? math?

I generally buy them for classes that I have to do problems for, like math and chemistry.

For math classes, before buying a solution manual check to see if cramster.com carries the textbook. Getting a membership for a few months could save you some money, and you will have access to the solutions for even-numbered problems as well.

I was looking up some books for classes I am planning to register and…
“*3 Vector Calculus Bundle (text+s.g./s.m.+ucsd Flyer), 5 Edition, 9780716784203”

I assume s.g./s.m. is study guide/solutions manual…

What is a UCSD flyer?

i wouldn’t waste the money on a study guide - just go to the library or grab a friend’s copy and photocopy/take pictures of the pages you need. they’re not easy to resell, either.

think of the trees!

is there a specific place to look up what textbooks we need for our classes? do we need to get them by the first day of class? or should i wait until have my registration date to start getting them?

^When you sign up for classes, you go to your list of classes and it will have a book that you click on that shows you your textbooks. You generally don’t need them by the first day of class and in some cases you don’t need them at all. The first day of one of my classes the professor said “I know that it says there’s a textbook required for this class, but there isn’t. I told the bookstore to put it as optional, but they put it as required anyway because they wanted more kids to buy them. Sorry.” I’m not saying that that’s a common occurrence, but there’s some reason to wait to buying your textbooks. Either way, shop for them on Half.com, Amazon.com, eBay and sites like those. You’ll usually find them for half the price of the bookstore.

i had a question, i noticed that for chem6a, UCSD switched to a new textbook which is Principles Of General Chemistry Vol 1 W/aris Card (ucsd Custom), Volume 1, 2 Edition by Silberberg and the UCSD bookstore lists their price as $60 which is cheaper than when i searched on amazon and other known cheaper places…i’m just a little suspicious because i know that campus bookstores are known to be much more expensive

also the chem 6a textbook is different from the chem 6b textbook, i thought that the entire chem 6 abc series used the same book…can anyone help me with this?

fall 2010 will be the first time the silberberg textbook will be used.

every class prior to that (including summer 2010) used the jones and atkins textbook, which the dept’s been using for a decade, so they’re going to let them finish it out and not force the 6b kids (who took 6a in the summer or in spring) to buy a new textbook.

but if those 6b kids flunk in the fall and have to repeat it in the winter quarter, they’ll be out of luck.

There is no textbook assigned for this class. I e-mailed the prof and there is no reply yet.
I prefer not to be forced to buy from UCSD book store if it shows up in the last minuite. DOes anyone have a clue as to what this text book would be.

Can I use the textbook reservation service to reserve just the Chem 6a textbook? Or are they just going to reserve all my textbooks? Is the reservation service binding or non-binding?

yes, you can do individual textbooks. i don’t remember it being binding.

When should we buy our books? If we buy them now, will we have to use our money without financial aid to pay for them? Or if we wait until we get financial aid deposited in our bank accounts after all other fees are paid, would that be considered a bit late to get our books? Will we be behind?

I’m just wondering if we need the ARIS card and custom books. And what is the EXCEL with the Alice textbook for CSE3?

thank you for the info astrina!!

any idea on why it’s priced cheaper at the UCSD bookstore?

@Greenfield

I’m also in Ortlisky’s ECE 15 for Fall. After reading ratemyprofessor.com about him, I believe there is no specific textbook required, but instead you should find your own reference book for C programming.

@uchopeful2010 – Should I buy a reference book for C or C++?
