I think most of the competitive schools saw increases in the number of applicants this year. Thacher was no exception. They should report an 11% admit rate, the lowest in the school’s history. The overall number of applicants rose by 16%. Most interesting, and most exciting for the School, is that the number of US applicants rose by 14%. Over the last ten years, the number of US Applicants to most top tier North American boarding schools has been declining. So, it’s very exciting to see this reversal. Of course, being the Thacher homie that I am, I like the way the School continues to be totally focused on fit. Yes, they need to be sure that a kid is smart enough to do the work and be happy, but then it’s really about well roundedness, engagement, warmth, intellectual curiosity, a love of the outdoors, and community-mindedness. Anyway, I thought that these admissions factoids might be interesting. I feel the same way about Thacher and Penn, my alma mater. I’d no more get into these places today than fly to the moon. I have so much respect for the kids on this site who are willing and able to get into the ring and give it their best. Such a talented group.
Hi ThacherParent- So nice to see you on here. I haven’t been here for a while- noticed today how close it is to March 10th and though I would stop in for a visit. You were so helpful to my daughter during her process. Hope you are well.
And good luck everyone!
Whoah… There go my chances… [-O<
@Thacherparent, great to see you again. I haven’t been active for the past few months (almost a year or so). DS is graduating from Thacher in June. Time does fly! Having just returned to school after spring break, he is busy with senior X project now.
The numbers look amazing! I guess the overall rise in Asian application should be smaller than US application??
And if so, I guess it is somehow due to the Trump’s foreign policy that might have discouraged international applicants.
I have some friends in China and Korea who are now having a second thought on sending their kids to US colleges and boarding schools. (Due to increasing difficulty of having a job upon graduation without a green card.)
To anyone who is accepted to Thacher on M10, big congrats! Thacher is such a great school and not much different from your first impression. For any question, please PM me!
We know seven families whose children applied. None were admitted. Lots of broken hearts in our town.
We have a 7th grader and are drawn to small schools that are deliberate about encouraging a culture of kindness and thoughtfulness (in every sense of the word). But getting into Thacher seems nearly impossible! Feel free to PM me with other ideas or insights!
Just PM’d you @CaliMex
