Is anyone applying? Seems like a great school

I was considering Thacher
but then,,

Its too small

my son is applying and we visited there in November. Also -- if you do a search of the board, I know that at least one parent had posted about her daughter attending.

It is small -- but that is what my son is looking for.

What did you think of it when you visited, hsmomstef? I really like the horse program (my sister has a horse but I rarely ride it lol). The only thing I don't like about Thacher is that there's not much diversity in the course offerings, and they only go up to French IV, but that's not a big deal.

Gorgeous school -- dorms were awesome, very green, buildings within easy walking distance of each other. it was clear that the weather is usually great there -- their daily school meeting are held outside, which you couldn't do at most new england prep schools. Kids were friendly, casual -- but serious about their studies. Art, drama and music looked great. small classes, nice mix of kids. Food is supposed to be fantastic (mostly organic, all natural, etc).

The horse program was really interesting -- and I honestly thought that the classes offered were a solid group, especially considering how small the school is.

One thing we were concerned about is whether the school would be overly asian, since it is located in California --and it was not. They had an excellent balance of Asian, Hispanic, Caucasian, African-American and others. I was impressed by the diversity and how well the kids seemed to interact -- no small groups or cliques that I could see (something I looked for). I think that is due to the small size of Thacher.

It is a school I would recommend -- but it is also very competitive for entry. Not quite at the level of Andover and Exeter, but close -- they get quite a few excellent applicants. I know that when we toured, there were 15 other families in our group and 15 families in the group before us. They tour 3 days a week and and average 30 families a day -- which surprised us. The other schools on our list did not have nearly as many people interested in them.

Did you visit Cate, too?

No -- I had just heard from too many people that Cate was a little too preppy. if you recall, my son is interested in schools with an emphasis on the environment/sustainability/outdoor recreation. Cate didn't fit that bill -- so we didn't bother. I have heard that Cate is beautiful and an excellent school -- just a little more preppy than Thacher. You might also look at Stevenson -- less selective, but I hear it is really nice.

if it was a bigger school i would probalbly apply but no!!
