Hey everyone! My teachers have written me very nice letters for a bunch of summer programs, as I am sure yours have too. I was thinking of giving them a small box of candy each, as a token of gratitude. I know it is customary to do that for college recommendation letters, but I am not sure about summer program letters, since I will be asking them for college letters next year. What are your thoughts on this? Is it inappropriate/bribe-like or simply a nice gesture?

If you do it after they’ve already written and submitted a recommendation for you, I’m sure they’ll see it as more of extended gratitude rather than a bribe.

It’s definitely not a bribe if they’ve already finished with the letters. Go ahead, it’s a nice gesture.

As a teacher who writes a lot of letters of recommendation each year, I can say that there is no need for a gift. But, the best thing you can do is to write a nice thank you note. It is a part of our job, true, but an honest thank you is all we need. Some people might not want chocolate, but everyone appreciates a sincere, from the heart thanks.

Thank you everyone. My mom already bought some boxes, as it turns out, so I will attach a small thank you note. :)
