Hi, AdmissionsDaniel!

As a rising high school senior deep in the college process' midst, I can't express how helpful your posts have been (and I'm sure my appreciation is widely shared)!! I visited JHU back in March and am definitely enthusiastic about the school's programs and offerings...but I -do- have a couple of questions that you can probably answer more explicitly than others I have asked.

Firstly: I'm especially interested in JHU's Writing Seminars major. Perhaps I'm buying into a common misconception about Hopkins, but is the campus mostly geared towards science-oriented majors? Are there just as many opportunities for WS majors as there are for Biology, BME, or chemistry majors in terms of research, clubs, etc? Are humanities majors in the VAST minority, or is it more even than I've been told?

Secondly: Though this may be an understatement, I'm extremely into theatre -- playwriting, performing, directing, etc. I know there is no theatre major at Hopkins, but what about the theatre minor? Is it popular? What about extracurricular theatre opportunities? Is there a definite theatre community, or is there not much of an interest among students?

Thanks!!

Thanks for the message and I am glad you appreciate my posts. In the future, just one favor ... we prefer on the JHU boards on CC that you not title your thread with my name in it or a general title like JHU Questions ... rather you title your thread with some sense of the questions you are asking. It helps navigate the boards better. Now on to your questions:

(1) You are definitely buying into one of the big myths. More than 1/2 of JHU undergraduates are pursuing majors in the Humanities and Social Sciences. International Studies is the most popular majors at JHU, and Writing Seminars is in the top 6 for most popular. There is absolutely as much resources for Humanities students in terms of research, internships, studying abroad, extracurriculars, etc. In fact, much of the academic advancements in the recent past and in the near future relate directly to the Humanities. More Humanities faculty, the re-building of Gilman Hall as a Humanities center ... it is not just something we are trying to market ... the Humanities do exist and they do matter greatly at JHU.

(2) There is a theatre minor and it is becoming more popular each year. There is also the Homewood Arts Certificate. There are a ton of theatre opps from Witness! to the Barnstormers to the JHU Theatre Company ... much of the theatre is extracurricular and open to all students.

For both of your questions - Humanities and Theatre - I recommend you check out Hopkins Interactive (http://apply.jhu.edu/hi/) and the Hopkins Interactive forums (http://apply.jhu.edu/forums/).

The blogs and threads by Laura P. and Jackie M. really discuss what it is like to be a Humanities students at Hopkins.

Also, Esther and Michelle B. are heavily involved with theatre.

another anomaly: I would like to add to Admissions Daniel's post regarding theater at Hopkins. Although my son was an athlete in HS and continues to play a varsity sport at Hopkins, he has always been into theater. Last semester, he took a class with John Astin ( Famous actor, director. You know him as the father in the Addams' family movies. Perhaps you also know his son, Sean Astin), who is the head of the department. My son loved the class so much, that he is registered for an advanced acting/directing class with Prof. Astin for this fall semester. Hopkins has wonderful theater opportunities, and a fantastic man at the helm, who not only teaches, but has practiced his trade as a successful professional. I don't know where else you might find such a wonderful opportunity.

robert: What a great post! It is wonderful to be able to let people know about some of the great things happening at Hopkins. Sure, the sciences are wonderful...but there is sooooo much more to the school. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks SO much to those of you who replied. Those theatre groups sound awesome, roberthhid -- particularly Witness. You've really verified my gut instincts about JHU. :)

This is a good link for what's happening in the arts right now at JHU:

Almost every weekend something is going on right on campus and usually a variety of events.
