I am trying to book that flight now for my D to get home. If my D did not register for classes yet what are safe dates to book.

On that same line of thinking, after Christmas break, when are they allowed back on campus? The Saturday or Sunday before classes start in January?? I know for certain athletics and sorority rush they come back sooner. Just keeping an eye on airfare here too…

I can get back to you. There is a list somewhere in my house of the dates.

@momwantstoknow - Tulane is off on Wednesday before Thanksgiving, so that is always safe. Many kids book Tuesday evening flights. It is possible to get classes that go into the late afternoons on Tuesdays, so you may want to try for a Wednesday flight, even though they are ridiculously crowded.

@dolphnlvr6 - They are allowed back in the dorms after 9AM on the Saturday before classes start in January.

Dolphnlv6- the registrar’s schedule says they go back January 13th.

Fallen chemist when should i send her back to Tulane?

@MomWants2Know - Most people go back on that Sunday after Thanksgiving, but the couple of years we didn’t do Thanksgiving in NOLA we picked Saturday. The weather is always an issue that time of year if you are from the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, or Rocky Mountain states, so having a buffer day is safer, plus then she had a quiet day back at school to get a bit of a jump on any papers she needed to finish or a head start for finals. If you do pick Sunday, I would at least schedule a flight that leaves in the morning. That way if there are issues she at least has a chance of getting in by the end of the day, and if there are no issues she is back at school by mid-afternoon or so and can get organized before classes on Monday.

A word about Thanksgiving…last year, I originally booked Wednesday to Sunday. Then DS’s classes on Tuesday were cancelled, so I switched his flight to Tuesday morning. (Flew Southwest, so no change fee, but I did have to pay the difference in price). Then, as the holiday got even closer, all but one of his Monday classes were canceled, so I ended up changing again to Saturday, which gave him a full week off! (Once again, no change fee on Southwest, but once again, had to pay the price difference which was by then pretty high. So, his flight which started off at $300 ended up costing over $600! But since it gave him a full week home - and I missed my boy…I paid). This year, I think that I am going to book Tuesday - Sunday (on Southwest), knowing that there is a chance that I may have to change it last minute. So, bottom line is that some teachers will end up canceling classes during the week before Thanksgiving, but you will not know until the last minute.

As for Christmas, be aware that girls who plan to pledge a sorority go back to school a few days earlier in January…

Good advice, jozuko, but just want to be sure parents don’t think that it’s necessarily common. None of my D’s classes were cancelled so she came home Tuesday night…

We’ve already decided our son will stay for Thanksgiving. Just too short a time frame to fly him home and back. Two days end up being travel days anyway. He’s fine with it. Out of curiosity I just did a quick check and flights are already $600 !

As we all know, airline ticket pricing is more complicated than the Manhattan Project and just as secret as to how they get there. But for those of you buying tickets, keep your eye on the going price, I think they have to refund you the difference if it goes lower, and it does sometimes.

@dolphnlvr6 - I don’t know your family situation of course, but if it is amenable to it you might consider going to NOLA for Tday. We did 2 of her 4 years, and it was great.
