Our son finally made UVA his choice. Since Charlottesville is a long way from WI and exams are only a week after Thanksgiving we thought we would have Thanksgiving in VA. Does anyone have an idea for a resort/inn/lodge within an hour or so of Charlotteville? Stuffy, no. Somewhere we can relax as a family, yes. There are 4 of us.
Thank you.

Great idea. If you can afford it, the Boar’s Head Inn is one of the nicer hotel complexes in the area,

If you go to visit Monticello, UVa students get in for free with their ID, as long as they are with a paying visitor. A new museum was built at the base of Monticello, which is included in the admission.

You might also take a trip up to Montpelier in Orange Va. It is a 40 minute scenic drive along Rt. 20 from Cville. It is the restored home of James Madison.

I’d also suggest saving a day for DC.

The Boars Head Inn is lovely, but indeed pricy on holiday weekends. Make reservations early as they do fill up. We have been several times, most recently for Easter Brunch. It’s definitely a splurge. You don’t have to stay at the inn to enjoy meals there. I would also check the Dinsmore House Inn which is on the corner (a personal favorite) and see how their rates compare. They have a wonderful hot breakfast included. If you want to venture a bit further out from c’ville there’s the Chestnut Hill Bed & Breakfast in Orange (25mi), The Iris Inn in Waynesboro (25mi), and the Cedar Spring Inn in Charlottesville (11mi fm UVa). Then there’s the option to rent a condo. Dean J has posted the link several times. I’ll search from my laptop tomorrow and post the link.

Thank you both for the ideas. I will check out all of these. A condo is a good idea. Checking out something in the mountains would also be interesting.

Check out Wintergreen Resort. I haven’t made the trip from Charlottesville, but my guess is it’s about 45 min. or so away.

boarshead is a bit stuffy in my opinion… I would definitely look into the condo idea.

Just a heads up. The UVa and Virginia Tech football game will be in Charlottesville on the 27th. Make reservations early! :)

Oh that’s right, I forgot the Turkey Bowl is in c’ville this year. I even have hotel reservations on the corner so you’d think I would have remembered/put that together. Thanks for the reminder Dean J!! :)

I love being at the game when it’s in c’ville, but tbh there’s something to be said for watching from the comfort of your own home, dry, warm, with friends, a great view on the big screen, lots of great snacks and drinks, and no driving. It’s nice they swap every other year.

If you can get it I would suggest the residence Inn (Marriott) in Charlottesville. You can book a two bedroom suite, with a living room and kitchen. It would be a great way to relax as a family when you are not sightseeing at the great places suggested above!

Thanks, all. I have the Residence Inn reserved for now. BHI in is booked. I plan to check out condos and the Wintergreen. Any feedback on those options and others would be appreciated.

For condo rentals, here are websites Dean J has posted in the past:

If you want to attend the UVa/VT game get your tickets early-as in when they open up for sale to the general population. VT fans jump on those pretty fast since it is closer for many to watch their beloved Hokies than Blacksburg. We can use all the UVa fans we can get for that game!

For your Thanksgiving dinner ideas you can also go to the website, open table when it gets closer to September/October and see what restaurants are open and have tables available in the Charlottesville area.

Also, think about going to humpback rock hiking-there are easy trails and you don’t need to be a regular climber. Monticello is always beautiful to visit and the views are amazing. There really is a lot to do in the area. Just note, in Virginia, what a difference a day makes when it comes to the weather. So be sure to check out the forecast before you come. Last year on Thanksgiving we were wearing shorts, but that changed rather quickly two days later.

Enjoy your visit!

We booked at the DoubleTree. While a cozy Inn closer would be nice, hard to beat the price as a Hilton Honors member on the DT - especially for multi-night stay. The Charlottesville Hampton is also inexpensive.

As for tickets to the game, @woosah, when do tickets normall become available for purchase to the general public?

The Clifton Inn is about 20 minutes east of town (not too far from Monticello). Beautiful but not cheap.

We are season ticket holders, so I am not sure. But here is the link with number to call and ask them for the exact date:

WAHOOWA!!! GO HOOS GO!

grp2013 - They are still selling season tickets only. Mini packages will go on sale 6/3 (packaged games not announced yet), Family packages 7/19, and Single game tickets 7/19.

note: I am the slowest person on earth!! Crossed posts with woosah! Admitting just the smallest amount of envy for those season tickets. ;)

Thank you very much! :)

I second the Wintergreen Resort idea if your child wants to take a break from Charlottesville and Grounds to regroup.

Another idea would be to head 1.5 hours east to Williamsburg. A lovely place to spend Thanksgiving, and, again, a break for your child.

Keswick Hall is probably one of C-Ville’s finest (around 15 mins outside of town). Some may consider it stuffy, but I find it relaxing. When I’m in town visiting my D, we always go for high tea; the scenery is beautiful! It is pricey but nice.

I would agree with everyone who’s posted about the VT game – book immediately! I completely forgot that this year I need book a room like I did her first year (haven’t needed to the past two years because she has a roomy apt.). Since I’ve waited so long, our family may be bunking with yours, blueiguana or woosah! LOL I don’t think we’ll be able to cram the four of us in her little room. Although we’ve been to many football games, this will be our first UVA/VT game…should be exciting!

Come on over jc40! The more the merrier!! :)
