I recall a discussion similar to what I'm now posting, but it was at least 2 years ago, if not 3. I've not logged onto CC/Rice U site in eons. I'd love to see some ideas for those students not traveling home over the short Thanksgiving break, specifically some ideas for dining out on Thanksgiving - good (& hopefully affordable) restaurants relatively accessible to Rice. Am hoping to host from afar, a meal for students not able to venture home for the family holiday, make a nice gathering for 'friend family.' ... appreciate your ideas!

Our wonderful RAs are throwing a Thanksgiving party. Those of us not going home (myself included) are going to help cook/bake and then nom on some delicious foods. EOL!

See if anything like this is happening at your college of interest. If not, finding a friend to go home with for Thanksgiving would be a great option.

Thanks for the response, Tilgaham. Which college are you & I’ll see if my student is lucky to be there or … if they can get something planned & on the table(s)!

I’ve found entries from '07-'08-'09 in the archives for more ideas & plan to explore them ASAP.

Any other ideas still welcome - such as current nearby good spreads for the day (feasts at restaurants) - thanks again, Tilgaham & thanks in advance to other responders.

mom – here’s some info that might give you some ideas. An easy one might be getting the take-out Thanksgiving dinner from the La Madeleine in Rice Village.
blackeyedsusan - nice link, thank you! Starting this thread wasn’t a bad idea; I’m sure it is helping others too, with their planning. 'preciate it!

Found a plethora of ideas via a Google-search! I also emailed Benjy’s in Rice Village (mentioned in an older thread, I believe circa 2008). Now to pin my student down see who is ‘in’ and discuss the options from buying a prepared feast to share at a table or on a picnic blanket @ Rice or another spot in the area or making reservations at a convenient restaurant! Now … I haven’t clicked on the attached menu Benjy sent and don’t yet know the cost per head … but I’ve noticed multiple $$-$$$ options in different articles, etc.

This may be the thread you’re thinking of, mom’o’four –

Each year, my son and his friends have taken different routes – I think a feast in Chinatown worked out well one year, and some home cooking in his college, another year. I hear the campus is awfully quiet over the holiday – but when you have 30 page papers and lots of other work to manage, well – it all seems to work out. Much missed at home.

Chinatown is a great place to go. The price per head is very low and the food is fantastic.

There is a place called Fufu Cafe, which is on bellaire right by the Beltway, which is one of my favorite places to eat.

Thanks to all who contributed to this discussion, these suggestions. I feel I’ve direction now!
Over’n’out …

I wanted to add that I hear the campus is like a “ghost town” during Thanksgiving break, and for parents of Owls who are sticking around, it’s always nice to send an extra-delicious care package right before the holiday starts. Also to remember that after Thanksgiving, the Owls are back in class on Monday the 29th and then the last testing day (and for some, finals are over before then) is on the 15th – which means just about two weeks more before at long last: reunification!!! For some Owl Parents, it’s been a really long stretch since the August good bye hugs!

Just a reminder that college meals end Wednesday after lunch … and don’t re-open until Sunday.

My phrasing was clumsy – I just want freshman parents with Owls staying on campus over Thanksgiving to be aware that college dining rooms will be closed through the holiday, and it might be helpful to see how their kids plan to manage their meals over the holiday.

Ottoline is right - campus is a ghost town. I stayed there for one thanksgiving as my family was out of town on work. I ended up keeping an eye on the masters dog for 4 days and other than one other person, that was my only on-campus company.

On the other hand, it’s a great time to get caught up on work, especially with the last day of classes coming up in just a week on Dec. 2-- Fondren Library will be closed from 5 PM, Wednesday through Thanksgiving Day, but re-opens Friday until 6PM and is open, regular hours, Saturday on …
And the Rec Center will be closed on Thursday and Friday, re-opening on Saturday.
Some of the colleges put together Thanksgiving feasts, and some professors and fellow students invite students over to their houses – And not every Owl heads home …
