Do most people return home for Thanksgiving? Or do they just stay at Caltech because it's not a very long break?

I'd say it's about half and half. Anyone who lives in SoCal and most of those who live in North California go home. Most people from the east half of the US stay. I'd guess about half of the of the remaining people go home.

Thanksgiving is technically 4 days -- we don't get off Wednesday, but it's not unusual for people flying home to skip Wednesday classes to lengthen the vacation. It's also only 2 weeks before Winter break.

Some profs invite students over to their house for Thanksgiving dinner. Other students get together and do a pot luck. I've never stayed, but I've heard they usually have an impressive spread.

I ate twice at a professor's house and twice went to Santa Barbara with some recent alums to have dinner at their place. Both very nice experiences.

I've heard its really nice, with parents and other locals helping to prepare food. My S wants to stay next T-day
