Thanksgiving

S just returned to ND from Fall Break. Says doesn't want to come home for Thanksgiving too much driving for so little time. Are the dorms open? Any suggestions to help him make a Holiday away from home a good experience

many people will not go home for thanksgiving. i know that my dorm is having a nice dinner. our rector is cooking our turkey so that should be nice. other than that, the dining hall is also supposed to have a nice dinner.

The dining hall does have a very nice dinner. Also, depending on your professors, you may have some options there :) it is part of what makes ND special.

Last Thanksgiving my Philosophy professor made it clear that if you were staying in town, he wanted to have you over for Thanksgiving with his family. I fessed up that I was going to be in town, and me and one other student made the treck over there. It was an AMAZING time, one of the best THanksgivings I can remember, even though I was more than a thousand miles from home.

I doubt I will get that this year knowing my profs, lol, but there is always the dining hall, and that is nice. Quite a few students stay so you won't be alone, you just have to seek out those who are still around, but they are doing the same. It still can be very nice. I actually have never gone home for Thansgiving, and while I always wish I could, I have never changed that decision. It just is too short, and really you can do pretty well on campus. I hope that gives some hope :)

Son has said doesn't want to come home for Thanksgiving..."too far." Now he says everyone is going home. I figure that's probably not true. How about a roll call for all those staying...maybe we can help them get together and share the day.

I will be honest, the vast majority of people DO go home for Thanksgiving. I never do, but usually there are only a handful of people from my dorm here. I don't mind it, there is still good food on campus and I am usually very productive during that time, but that is me. It is true that most go home, however.

I know my brother always comes home for thanksgiving but he only goes to school bout 2 hours away....
ummm... i remember reading a same thread like this in the parents forum.....a simple search could give u some good ideas... if you have trouble locating it I'll try and find it for you

Thanks for the link. I know that it makes sense and I did not always make it home when I was in college, but it still makes me sad. I told him to ask on Facebook for any other Domer's who were staying. He has a friend from home who is staying--they haven't had much tme to see each other so maybe they can catch up.

swmmr, offer still stands with us--we will be there!

S not coming home for Thanksgiving, but many from his dorm are staying, so there might be more than you think around campus.

S has student from Alabama, and Japan, plus athletes are staying on campus.

As I recall, it can be a wonderful time on campus, to enjoy all the facilities, to bond with those that are around. I look at it as a mini vacation-
S went to movies theatre on Grape street which is nearby, outlet store for some great shopping- Located on Ironwood, off Edison. Bargains according to bookstore staff and those in the know. Hats .99, Licensed ND items up to 80% off! Open Nov 24 and 25th.
