I'm a new parent, already thinking ahead to making flight reservations for Thanksgiving. Considering that there's a whole month off beginning December 8, do most students still go home for Thanksgiving? If one wanted to stay on campus, do all the houses stay open during the Thanksgiving break? What is the travel in an out of Midway like on Wednesday and Sunday?

Thanks for any input that will help us figure out what to do.

the dorms definitely stay open for Thanksgiving and since it is so close to X-mas break many students who live a distance from the school do not go home and stay on campus. My child had a wonderful thanksgiving dinner at her dorm and she enjoyed the comradery of her house and cooking together with other students and senior house members. I don't think the expense and aggravation of traveling around Thanksgiving is worth it to have to deal with the crowds, expense, etc. of flying at that date. Midway can get very crowded as the flights in and out are much more limited than O'Hare, which itself can also be a nightmare. Furthermore, there are also many invitations offered for the Thanksgiving holiday from local students, families, and organizations. So, I would vote for having your child stay at school and waiting to get together for the xmas holiday. P.S. this also gives your child a chance to rest and begin studying for finals.

Many students will go home for Thanksgiving, but it's by no means necessary. Upperclassmen, especially, tend to stay on campus. There will be other people in his house who stay, and there is a Thanksgiving dinner held in Hutch Commons. Even if he does get lonely if his roommates are gone, it's only a couple of days. International students almost always stay, of course. The travel isn't too bad, I don't think. Overall, either way would work fine.

My son returned home his first two years, but I doubt that he will this year. There will likely be people on campus procrastinating about papers and finals to chill with!
