thanksgiving

Just curious, do OOS students go home over thanksgiving or is it too close to the end of the semester to spare the time?

It all depends on how far the student would have to travel and whether he or she can afford the trip. You'll be able to check your class schedule when you've confirmed registration for fall classes. Some classes don't meet the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. My daughter's class schedule indicated a class meeting that day, but it was canceled in the end. Nevertheless, she did not come home, because of distance (home is California, as far away from Boston as Europe), and cost.

There were a half dozen students on the floor of her dorm staying at MIT over the holiday, and they cooked two turkeys, a heap of potatoes, several pumpkin pies, and a mass of other stuff. If you end up staying at MIT, you'll find other students to celebrate with.

A lot of students stay (and as CalAlum said, cook meals together - I believe JKim blogged about it once) - and a lot of students go. I'm from California and decided not to go home, though I have family in Maryland and took a train there.

I went home my first three years, but stayed at school senior year. I'm from Ohio, and it was a 2-hour plane ride.

It's good to go home freshman year, I think, if you can, but keep in mind that by that point in the semester, you are basically going to want to sleep for four days straight and your family might get annoyed. (Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything.)

I have gone home every year for Thanksgiving, usually by train. I live in NJ.

And seriously, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is a joke. We don't officially have the day off, but so many people skip class anyway that we might as well. I have never had a problem skipping a class that day. In fact, a lot of my smaller classes have straight out officially canceled class that day, and in the larger lectures the professor has given a BS lecture, or a real lecture which he/she essentially repeated the following Monday. Seriously, don't hesitate to use Wednesday to travel, unless you have like an exam or something, which I highly doubt would ever happen anyway, unless your professor was just being a jerk on purpose...

my hall does an annual thanksgiving the weekend before.. lots of alums come and it's a really great time. this year we roasted a lamb in the courtyard, it was fairly epic.
if you wanna see the photo album pm me :)

My recent graduate only came home one Thanksgiving, and only because we had a family reunion. The other 3 years (and this year for my rising sophomore) they went home with friends for a day or two (usually a group of 4 or 5 went). They spent the rest of the holiday at the dorms, cooking together, sleeping and doing a little studying.

Most people I know did go home. And some people who lived really far away went and stayed with friends or family that was closer. Thanksgiving break happens at a great time when people aren't too close to finals to worry about them, but are definitely in need of a break. If it isn't a financial issue, I would recommend going somewhere for the long weekend.
