That Bus Pass

So... the other day, people were arguing a lot about the Cal-school wide bus pass. Technically, is the bus pass included anywhere in your tuition fee? Or is it a separate mandatory fee?

Thanks :)!

it is a separate mandatory fee

-gasps-

Thanks for the quick response :D!

for in-state, there actually is no tuition fee. Only out of state pay tuition. However . . .

Here is what you pay for a typical semester, ignoring room and board because most students are in private housing after their first year.

Educational Fee - $4,701.00
Student Services Fee - $450.00
Berkeley Campus Fee - $250.75
Student Health Ins Fee $761.00
Bus Pass Fee - $68.00

Overall, in-state students pay $6,230.75 for a semester, plus 1/2 of the annual room/board fee if in the dorms. Those first three fees together look a lot like a tuition, quack a lot like a tuition, and ‘waddle into the water to swim with their baby duckling fees’ a lot like tuition, but the charter of the UC system states it will be tuition free for California residents.

If out of state, the educational fee is bumped to $5,130.00 and a tuition charge is added - $11,010.50, increasing the cost of a semester for OOS to $17,670.25 plus half of the annual room/board fee if in the dorms.

The Student Health Insurance Plan fee (SHIP) can be waived if you demonstrate that you are covered by medical insurance at least as good as the SHIP plan and that it meets the criteria set out by the university.

In addition to these, there are a gamut of small fees you will encounter - from CalSO fees and SIRs and housing deposits to RSF (gym) fees and some others.

I never knew that rider :o! I’ve always thought “Fees” were all for educational fee. Thanks for enlightening us all :D!!! Really was helpful :)!

Fees, tuition–it’s all the same crap.
