That Swimming Test

Just found out, undergrads need to complete a swim test. My heart dropped, since Cornell is one of my top schools. I physically just can't do it. Anybody took the test or taking the test? What if we can't swim?

You have all 4 years to complete it. It’s really not that bad. It’s 50 meters, 3 times, so 150 meters total. If you really can’t do it, you can take Intro to Beginner Swimming as a PE course which will fulfill your swim test requirement and count as one of your two PEs

Learn.

If you have a physical impediment, then you should be able to get the requirement waived. The swim test will be the least of your worries at Cornell.

It’s ok if you can’t swim now, but you will have to learn in order to graduate. It’s not like you have to pull a Michael Phelps either, just have to swim 75 yards, or 3 laps, with no required time limit. If you have a physical impediment and actually cannot swim, then you will probably be exempt.

So if you pass the Swim Test as a freshman, then you do not have to take the 2 PE requirements? Or is the requirement 2 PEs + 1 Swim Test?

@lovemom: you need the 2 PE classes regardless. If you don’t pass the swim test, the swim class is one of your PE classes.

Thank you very much bigredengr!

Do you have to take the Swim test and “fail” before they will allow you to take the swim class in lieu of the swim test?

you can just not take the swim test (by skipping your time slot) and register for the swimming class instead.

Thank you faustarp!

Out of curiosity, why does a swim test need to be passed in order to graduate? Seems kind is silly

@FutureDocSauve: here’s Cornell’s explanation: [History - Swim Test - Cornell University](http://swimtest.cornell.edu/history.html).

if you can’t pass the test and fail the first time, you the take the class to learn how to pass it. If you pass the class, but fail the test three times afterwards anyway, then they’ll still graduate you
