Love the list.

John Sexton, the number one President (NYU)to watch according to Time Magazine, earned his B.A, M.A, and PhD in History of American Religion at Fordham University. Fordham is proud of him. Way to Dr. Sexton!

n.b., he later earned a J.D. from Harvard Law and clerked on the US Supreme Court for Warren Burger.

The UC students aren’t exactly loving Mark Yudof right now…

A populist puff piece posing as critical evaluation, with a shout out to Middlebury since so many Obama staffers went there (access, access, access).

Supersize me with McOSU, McASU and McDade. Large does not always equate to quality and doing what everyone else does IS a recipe for disaster (The Harvard Prez was trying to put it in more diplomatic terms, but Gee is too “full” to realize it).

I don’t know what it is about Gordon Gee, but everywhere he goes, the guy’s been a genius for elevating the quality and awareness of schools that he leads. First, it was Brown where he did a ton to enhance that school’s already strong rep. He topped this with his subsequent work at Vanderbilt which is now legitimately in the same class as the non-HYP Ivies. And now he’s applying his magic touch (again!) to Ohio State. It’s a more difficult task at a public university as the mission of the school is different, but I think it’s clear that Ohio State has positive momentum on many fronts. IMO he’s worth every penny that the school is paying him (and it’s a lot of pennies).

Mark Yudof can only the play the cards he has been dealt. UC stduents should be complaining to their state legislators for not adequately funding the university, not blaming Yudof for having to make painful cuts.

^^^ “IMO he’s worth every penny that the school is paying him”

I am glad to see somebody call this crap out for what it is…thank you baghDAD.

It’s funny, I visited NYU a few weeks ago and, on a tour, saw Mr. Sexton himself. If anyone’s not aware, there’s this big tradition at NYU of finding Sexton and giving him a hug, sort of a rite of initiation from what I understand. So, what did I do, I gave him a hug. Might have overstepped my boundaries as a visiting high school student from Wisconsin, but what do I care?

David Boren of Oklahoma was omitted from the list. If it’s a list of the 10 best presidents, he should be on it; if it’s just a list of presidents to watch (i.e., up and coming presidents), Boren’s already arrived.

What is the measure of “the best President?” It depends on whom you ask. Fundraising? Facilities improvement? Managerial skills? Resolving problems and disputes? Improving sports? Saving money? Warm and fuzzy personality? Hiring awesome world renowned faculty? Improving Admissions stats and scores? Improving USNWR ranking? Getting research up to Nobel Laureate levels? Does it help if the schools are already in the elite rankings or should we consider lesser known schools?

Lots of names could be or should be on that list. Maybe top 10 is too narrow.

NYU President Sexton is a Fordham University graduate, I note for those interested in such facts.

My bias would be towards a “transformational” kind of person, one who comes in and either cleans up a big mess or moves a lumbering giant into a leaner and meaner (rhetorically speaking…meaning more agile and avante garde) institution. I am less inclined to include those at schools that are already in the most elite ranks.

From ‘The New York Times’ - Education:

Mr. Stengel described the presidents list as the debut of what we hope will be another annuity, a ranking of the best presidents. To come up with this years deans list, Mr. Stengel wrote:

we talked to a broad cross section of education experts, including other college presidents, and from their recommendations we selected a diverse group of educators. We plan to do another list next year and open the process to nominations from educators, students and parents.

Gordon Gee was kind of a mess for Brown… not sure why Hawkette thinks his short tenure was so great…

My favorite Gordon Gee story is how he decided one of the most important things to do to build Vandy’s rep was to build nice facilities for Jews to attract a lot more to campus. He basically said the one thing that other schools like Vandy, but considered more prestigious, had one major difference-- a vibrant Jewish population.

LOL.

I thought a lot of UM people hated Mary Sue Coleman?

Interesting list. Hope it becomes annual.

“I thought a lot of UM people hated Mary Sue Coleman?”

They do. When you have over 40,000 students on one campus, you’ll get 40,000 opinions. It’s the way schools like Michigan are, no one is ever completely completely satisfied.

The UC president should be in the top 10. i think he mismanaged the UC.
and there are other better presidents than him. Rice, for example, is doing very well. yet its president isn’t in the list. and so is jhu.
