The 100 Best High Schools in America

...according to Newsweek. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7761678/site/newsweek/

Is your school ranked?

Mine is!

its so stupid the way they rank the schools tho

of aps taken/# of graduating seniors

like that really doesn't gauge a lot, especially b/c it doesn't use AP scores, like... some of those schools could have a lot of students getting like.. 1s... and we wouldn't know.

My school wasnt on the 1-1,000 but it was built last summer so that might have something to do with it.

The rankings only take into account public schools that don't have special entry requirements

like mine.

They only do PUBLIC schools, so no. Not trying to put down the schools that made the list, but the list would be totally different if they actually ranked all high schools.

271 :

my school doesn't offer a huge amount of AP's.....so i feel like using that as a basis for ranking schools is semi-pointless

then again, even trying to rank high schools at all is pointless IMO

303

We're the only school in our county that offers IB... We have a pretty nice list of APs... But the reason we got IB is because we're the "poor" school in the county. All the other schools in our county are ranked above us...

i wrote an article for my school's newspaper about how dumb the grading system is in order to qualify as one of the 100 best. whats even worse is that my school gets hooked into thinking that the list actually means something so the principal and superintdenant go out of there way to make ap classes based on open enrollment; that way they can pack as many kids into an ap class w/o it mattering whether or not there up to taking the class. this poses a few problems...the teachers complain that they must water down the class/compromis the integrity of an ap class in order to accomodate the less motivated students who arent up for the challenge, or who were put in the class just to boost the school's ratings. also it hurts the kids who actually want to do well in the class bc/ they must be slowed down. the ranking system is such bs bc/ it just takes into account if a student actually took the ap test, not whether they did well on it or not (qualified 3 or up). i think its so dumb, and even sadder that my school plays into the whole thing. they care more about ranks and less about what's best for the students. sigh...

its a horrible system

Jericho H.S was # 14 i believe, i dont go there but i have friends that do and what ive heard is that schools like this and many others do is that they eliminate Honors Classes from the curriculum in order to influence all kids who usually take honors, to take ap. and then on top of that they dont even ask these kids to show up to the ap exam, its all so they can get the prestigious name that they do have in ny. BLAH stupid rankings haha

The way they rank schools doesn't really tell how good a school is; APs are just one aspect.

My school is in the 70s. We have about 28 APs I think.

ranking has reached a new low

haha yeah. I didn't realize how badly the way they rank is. They don't tell you ANYTHING about the quality of the school. Oops....

"* Gave IB tests. AP and IB participation rates are indicators of a school’s efforts to get students to excel and prepare for college. Newsweek excluded schools with strict academic admissions criteria that prohibit motivated, average students from attending."

My school (Stuyvesant) doesn't qualify

123!!!!!

what nowww

You must go to a great school. :)

My school isn't ranked because it's a private prep, and that list is for publics.

12...that list really is stupid though. We were #8 at the last ranking so 12 became a disappointment. Expect...we are number 1 in the world for our school size for AP US gov and politics.

My school is #25. errr the ranking sucks lol

Do they take out scores of 1's and 2's when counting the # of AP's taken?
I know a much better school in my district that should be higher than mine. If they count 1's and 2's, thats the only way I see my school at #25.

Well next year I'm going to a public boarding school with entry requirements that is ranked 30th. Its not on this list because this list only does public schools. There is another list that I saw somewhere else that ranked all schools and the top 45 slots or so were all private or public with entry requirements.

I read article and couldn't exactly tell how schools were ranked...is it just # of APs offered...or # of kids who take ap tests, or what...offering AP classes mean nothing really....read some old threads regarding AP requirements, pre reqs, requirements for getting into the classes, requirements to take the tests, # of APs allowed to be taken at once, etc.

The list is pretty dumb if you as me.

my school is mad rich
