The 3.3 to 3.6 (GPA) Parents Thread

Actually American U has Div 1 sports. Marymount U is just over the bridge from American and my sources tell me they are strong in fashion…

Saw the NEU suggestion and just thought I should share that we had several top 10% students from our school (I teach there) this year and last deferred. While a few from both years did get in, the others were all approx 3.8+ students, high SAT scores, sports, tons of EC’s and leadership.
I would recommend Bryant (Smithfield, RI) and Bentley U - Waltham, MA (my son was accepted there - similar stats to your daughters). Both have excellent Business programs. From what I understand, Bryant’s academic entrance requirements are a bit less stringent, but their athletics are at a higher division.
From what I understand Bentley and Bryant are both generous with FA while NEU gives very little.

My daughter goes to a school that doesn’t use GPA but the actual grades do its based on 100% and so I always have to figure out what the GPA would be. I know though the colleges recalculate it so that makes me even more confused!

Well her GPA probably if higher than 3.6 but based on the PSAT she isn’t going to have the SAT’s needed to get into the schools my son was accepted at. They have similar HS grades but I do not think she will test anywhere close to him. It’s too bad but that’s the way it is. There are schools that really put a lot of weight on those tests so they aren’t going to be options.

My son is at NEU and much as I would love her to go there she has no interest-not that she doesn’t like it but she doesn’t want to go to her brother’s school. I am OK with that as I wonder if she would even be accepted-@amroy67 what you have shared is true that school really is becoming harder every year to get into.

She is looking to be a business major with Accounting as her choice at this time. I am familiar with Bryant and Bentley and they are both well regarded schools in New England-I would think Bentley has a stronger name recognition but I really don’t know.

I know NEU is generous with Merit Aid but you have to be pretty high in their accepted student profiles to get enough where it is going to make a difference. I had heard Bentley wasn’t very generous but I will have to look at that. Bryant I know nothing about that but will check as those are two schools that are on her list.

OK just read you were referring to Financial Aid sorry I misread that! I don’t know about the FA since we didn’t qualify for any anywhere for my son except Bucknell so I don’t even think about that issue.

That last post is from LAST February (2013).

This thread was actually started 4 years ago. Lots of old news on this thread.

OOPS thanks @thumper1!

I just wanted to thank everyone who contributed to this thread. When my daughter was looking at colleges and trying to figure out where to attend, this thread and other similar ones encouraged her to consider schools she might not otherwise have thought she had a shot at. In the end, she is attending the “dream school” she fell in love with sophomore year, that we thought she would never have a chance of attending last year. But she worked hard and proved herself and got in. I’m very proud! I hope this thread can give other families hope and inspiration!

GPA 3.46 (with explanation of extenuating LD/mental health circumstances which affected GPA)
Rigor: a bit over half honors & I.B. classes
SAT 2100
SAT2s: Literature 790, World History 720
Recommendations: probably excellent
Essays: excellent
ECs: fairly normal school-related, with outside passions (art, etc), but nothing huge

ACCEPTED:
Mount Holyoke College (attending)
Bard College
Hampshire College

WAITLISTED:
Wellesley College (she was surprised and will definitely stay on the waitlist. She was super inspired by her visit there…)

REJECTED:
Skidmore College
Smithe College

Staceyneil, I’m a Mount Holyoke alumna, and being there was one of the best experiences of my life. It really is a special place. Congratulations to your daughter! I hope she loves it!

@Quotia Thank you!!! She is over the moon happy about it. She’s been spending all her free time on the Class of 2018 facebook page meeting all her new classmates and telling us about how at home she already feels :)

I thought I’d bump this thread since there seem to be a lot of recent questions about where to apply with this GPA range…

Hi I am a female student from Alaska with a GPA of 3.56 UW and 30 ACT/1980 SAT. I have already applied to University of Minnesota TC as this is my top choice. I applied about two months ago and now that admission decisions have started rolling in and i am still yet to receive mine (but expecting soon) my bf and sister are encouraging me to apply to more schools. I am planning on finishing up additional applications by the end of this month, including:

UC Boulder
University of St Thomas
U Denver
Oregon state

Can anyone recommend some other schools i should shoot for? I am planning on majoring in neuroscience so a school that offers a degree in that would be nice. I prefer the westcoast to midwest area and i dont really care about the size, but I do want to go some place that is very diverse and liberal. Thank you so much! I am getting really anxious about receiving a decision from UMN and am thinking I should start applying to some second choice and safeties already.

@asthrera you might want to post this as it’s own question on the broader “College Search and Selection” forum. Perhaps with a title like, “Suggestions for 3.56 gpa/ 30 ACT/1980 SAT Neuroscience Major?” I’m sure folks will be happy to help you!

@staceyneil‌ oh okay I will probably do that. Sorry didnt mean to intrude. Thank you though!

@asthrera Not an intrusion at all! You’ll just get more action over there… this thread isn’t very active :)
