the 3 best colleges in each state

Indiana

University of Notre Dame

Indiana University

Purdue University

-Holy Cross College is not even close to being the second best college in Indiana. It would rank close to the bottom in Indiana. Some smart kids choose to go here because they are passionate about getting into Notre Dame. They try to go the same route Rudy (Rudy is a good movie) did because Holy Cross is affiliated with Notre Dame and it is seen as a loophole in which you can gain easy entry into Notre Dame if you perform well.

PA:
1. UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA BABY WHOOO WHARTON RULES
2. Carnegie Mellon
3. Swarthmore though its overrated

Let's try thinking outside the box, just for fun. Instead of going by overall ranking or reputation, I'm going to go by my "gut" (in most cases but with at least SOME input from others) on the educational experience.

California

Deep Springs
Claremont Colleges
Stanford

Pennsylvania

Swarthmore
Bryn Mawr
Lehigh

New York

Sarah Lawrence
Vassar
Yeshiva

Virginia

Washington and Lee
University of Richmond
William and Mary

North Carolina

Davidson
Duke
Wake Forest

Massachusetts

Amherst
Mt. Holyoke
Tufts

Colorado

Colorado College
University of Denver
Regis

Texas

Rice
Austin College
Trinity

Minnesota

Carleton
Macalester
St. Olaf's

Ohio

Antioch
Kenyon
Oberlin

Illinois

Shimer
Knox
University of Chicago

Minnesota
Carleton
Macalester
St Olaf
U Minn Twin Cities runner up

Wisconsin
Beloit
Lawrence
U Wisconsin Madison

I like Tarhunt's different thinking, I agree with most of it. Though, for undergrad and forgetting about rankings I would instead say:

Massachusetts:
Amherst
Wellesley
Smith

Illinois:
Knox
University of Chicago
Lake Forest

Wisconsin:

UW- Mad
Beloit (best LAC)
insertschoolhere_ depends what you want to do... Lawrence has a good arts department... La-crosse is good for phy ed. Whitewater- business & teaching... milwaukee-- health sciences, engineering, grad school.. stout-- engineering. Really, no one school stands out for every major.

North Carolina

Duke
Wake Forest and Davidson
Chapel Hill

Tennessee

Rhodes
Sewanee - U of South
Vanderbilt
U Tennessee Knoxville - runner up

Massachusetts:

Harvard
Williams
Amherst

Connecticut:

Yale
Wesleyan
Trinity

New York

Columbia
Cornell
Vassar/Colgate
NYU-runner up

California

Stanford
Claremont McKenna
UC Berkeley

Montana
Carroll C
Montana Tech
Montana St Bozeman

North Dakota
ND State Fargo
U ND Grand Forks
Jamestown C

South Dakota
Augustana
SD School of Mines
SD State

West Virginia
U West Virginia
U Charleston
West Virginia Wesleyan

Mississippi
Belhaven
Millsaps
Mississippi State

Louisiana
Tulane
Loyola New Orleans
Louisiana State Baton Rouge

Oregon
Reed
Willamette
Lewis and Clark

"Reed
Willamette
Lewis and Clark"

I'd choose either U of O or OSU to stick in place of Willamette.

For NC, I'd say Davidson way over Wake Forest...

Virginia:

UVA
W&M
Washington & Lee
(Runner-up: U Richmond)

And that's not even because I go to UVA...in terms of combination of education, overall environment, and social life, it kicks W&M's butt, IMO.

New York:

columbia
Cornell
west point

Wisconsin:
UW-Madison
Marquette
Lawrence

For Massachusetts I would say Harvard, MIT, and Olin.

Ohio

Case Western
Ohio State
...that's it

Louisiana
LSU

New York
Columbia
Cornell
Westpoint

Maryland
MD U
Annapolis

Colorado
CU
Air Force

Anyone who would leave out N'western while ranking schools in Illinois is clearly insane ... especially if they do so while including UIUC!
