The 4-year subject requirement?

The collegeboard site says that Princeton recommends to take 4 years of Math and Foreign Language.

How important is it having a 4th year of language as a senior? And how important is it to "continue" math by taking Stats AP if you have already completed the highest level available at your school, BC Calc?

Is a 4th year of language better than a 4th year of history? I love both subjects about equally so it's merely a question of the usefulness of each.

Thanks in advance!

Since you took Calc BC junior year you are ahead of most students. No problem there (in my opinion).

I don’t know if not taking a 4th year of language is a deal breaker, but they definitely encourage students to stick with it throughout high school. Can you not take both language and history?

I think it depends how many language credits you have. For example, I got one credit for French in 8th grade and then I took it for 3yrs in high school before quitting senior yr. This technically gives me the 4 recommended language credits. As for math, I would advise you to take stats senior yr just to be on the safe side.

I too had 4 credits of language by the time junior year ended. My guidance department was still firm on its position that the top schools would want me to continue my language studies.

If I do that, I have to sacrifice either Statistics AP or Econ AP. My schedule looks like this right now (all AP’s):

English (must take)
Music Theory (must take)
Physics C (will take no matter what)
Econ
Stats
Modern Euro

No language as you can see. I am actually thinking of replacing Stats and Modern Euro with French (AP) and Chemistry (also AP). Is this wise? (In the context of PRICETON???)

Do whatever you think is necessary.

Due to weird scheduling at my school, I had to choose between spanish 4 and AP Physics. I was really worried about not having a fourth year of foreign language, but decided to go with the AP course.

I explained my dilemma in the extra comments section of the common app and everything turned out ok… I got accepted to Princeton on Wednesday :)

So just do what you can, explain it if you have NO other options, and the admissions people might be willing to look over that “strongly suggested” requirement. Also, work really hard to get a good grade in that class to make it worth your while. :)

merrymelodys, thank you for the thoughtful comment. Did you take four maths and four years of history?

yes, I took four years of both math and history. And five science classes, but that’s because I’m planning to major in science :)
