The "A HA" Moment We All Hope For

Yes, we visited a dorm room in the towers. D isn't sure if she would like to live there where she could meet more people and everything is right there or in Lothrop where she would have easy access to nursing classes and hospital. Both have advantages and disadvantages. It would have been nice if we could have seen a room in Lothrop. Anybody out there live in Lothrop or know what it's like?

I seem to remember a thread or some talk about Lothrop during the summer when people were finding out their room assignments. Check the old threads and maybe you can find it in the archives. You should be able to do that at the bottom of the Pitt thread page, or maybe with the search feature.

Maybe this will help:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=220165&highlight=lothrop

I also noticed a few other older threads came up when I did the "Search this forum" thingee for "Lothrop."

Thanks mercymom and weenie. Those sites helped a lot. I will be sure to let my D know what they said.

A quick note, stowmom--my D's roommate, a freshman nursing student, lives in Tower A. I haven't heard any complaints about distance to nursing classes, maybe that would be more important later in the curriculum. I know she has chemistry in the Chevron building. . .I think that's about the longest distance she goes for a class--and that's not really far.

I have lived in the Towers, Lothrup, and Sutherland. I really suggest the Towers for first years students. I actually moved from Sutherland to the Towers since all of my new friends lived in the Towers. The rooms aren't as great, but you can't beat the community and not having to go outside to get food (unless you are eating at odd times and need to go to the Union instead).

I did like Lothrup, but only after I had made friends for my sophomore year. I always kidded that if I ever got hurt or sick all you had to do is fall out of the window and you were in a hospital :p. Also, it is a bit more of a hike to the dining halls, which is not too fun in the dead of winter.

ophiolite:
When we were touring the towers (wow, try saying that 10 times) I did not see any sort of lounge on the floor. Is that true? Where do kids hang out there?

There are large lounges on every second or third floor, which is actually not bad for meeting even more people.

There are lounges on I think every other floor. They are around, but in my experience, most students hang out with their friends in their rooms (especially in Tower B as they are slightly larger than A) or somewhere else on campus.

So far into her freshman year, it seems my D, who lives in Tower A, does most of her socializing on other floors in the tower--the lounges, and other students' rooms. Evidently she and her friends often migrate down to the tenth floor, I think that's the SPACE living floor.

Towers are definitely best for freshmen, stowmom. My son lives in a suite in the quad this year, and it is much more difficult to meet people in adjacent suites or on other floors. I can see how freshmen might feel isolated. Go with the traditional dorms with the hall bathrooms, where everybody leaves their doors open and it is very easy to meet people.

Thanks for all your help everyone. CC is great. My D said I'm getting addicted to it, but it's so informative.

Which tower would we have toured? It had double rooms. Thanks.

P.S. I second everyone's opinion of freshmen dorms. Some people call them "freshmen ghettos" but I know at my oldest son's school most freshmen LOVE living in the biggest, noisiest, least-fancy freshmen dorm, because that's where they meet everybody.

I think we toured Tower A. We saw a second floor male room although a girl was in the room to talk about it (a Pitt Pathfinder). I think I remember them talking about the engineering living learning community was in that tower.

Tower A and B has doubles. C is all singles. ^Stowmom, you are right. SPACE is in Tower A.

Thanks for the info on the dorms...BTW, has anyone heard anything about financial (merit) aid yet? We're sitting at the edge of our seats. Has anyone phoned OAFA? I hate to be a "helicopter parent", but this waiting is killing us... We need to know if we're coming-or-going.....I know that they started to review applications already. Does anyone know if they review based on the particular school to which the student applied, or intended major? There doesn't seem to be too much info out there - except the usual transcript/scores/gpa info...

Thanks alot!

I'm glad to see your kids enjoyed their visits. My three years at Pitt were the best of my (short) life. Nothing compares to a great school in the heart of a beautiful city. Oh, how I miss Pittsburgh.

my D also had an a-ha moment at pitt. she was only looking at and interested in small liberal arts colleges until she decided to look at pitt just to compare to a larger school. this was the only open house we attended where she seemed excited. she was accepted to the honors college but also 3 other schools and we want to wait and see how the financial pkgs look until we decide on pitt for sure. but it is by far her first choice!
