Who would think a school like that would require a "swim test"?? I can't swim.............sobs
It is more likely for me to get 2400 on the new SAT instead of passing the "swim test".

omg i can't swim either!

I can swim! :)

Haha, that's pretty funny. I can swim, so it's all good. I actually have aspirations of swimming on the MIT varsity team, but unfortunately (for me) it's a pretty good team, so we'll see...

i swim like a rock.
it'll be really pathetic if i can't graduate from college because i failed PE. :P

relax, yo. if you don't know how, you have 4 whole years to take lessons and learn, and it'll be fine.

"4 whole years to take lessons and learn" ~goddess32585
With MIT workload, I probably won't have time for anything except for problem sets.

.........i do hope you're joking. you'll have time, trust me. you'll go insane within 3 weeks if all you do is psets. also, unless you take four units of swim before you learn, you'll have to do other PE stuff, at the very least. ntm there's summer and iap, which would be hard to totally fill with academic things.

i can't even float! :D

laughs i can't float either, not enough body fat. that's why i learned to swim, it beats sinking :)

oh yeah, i should've told feuler, i wouldn't be that sad about your chances of making the swim team right yet. strange things are possible here, when it comes to athletics.

I can float, but I sinks whenever I tried to breath.

Wait can someone tell me what the whole physical fitness test is about - how far or fast are you supposed to swim, and what other aspects of the test are there? Thanks!

lol 'tony

Wow thanks LSA!

I didn't take the swim test until IAP my senior year. They didn't make me "jump feet-first into water 13 feet deep" though. The person who did the test let me do it in the shallow pool at the Z-center, which was much less scary. :-)

arent you allowed to take the beginning swimming class in place of the requirement?

I do not know for sure ... but I'd be amazed if MIT doesn't have a very open policy about walk-ons for their swim team (as in anyone willing to do the work is on the team) ... I'd suggest contacting the coach who I'd guess will be happy to have you join!

*Currently, the test requires one to jump feet-first into water 13 feet deep and swim four pool lengths (100 yards). The swimmer can take as much time as necessary, but they must swim continuously (no resting on the ropes). Any stroke is allowed, except backstroke, which is allowed on the final lap only.

Many students continue to work after the test is complete, treading water for the ten minutes following the swim test. This is the small boats test, a requirement for crew, sailing, swim team, and water polo.*

OK so after I do that, they record my 100-yard time on my transcript?

Do varsity athletes take PE?
