The ACT is not enough time or is it just me?

Am I the only one who thinks that the ACT doesn't give enough time? It's 35 minutes for 40 questions on science, and then on top of that you have to analyze and interpret all the graphs and charts. I only finished the English on today's test because it's my best subject. And then on the Reading, you have to read the 4 passage in only 35 minutes.

If I had more time, like I do at home on practice tests, I know I would score higher. What do you think?

It’s not just you. The ACT cannot count on all students knowing the same level of information. So, to make up for an easier (knowledge wise) test, they add time constraints. The test is designed so that only some score well. Part of that is finishing. Finishing on time is just as much a part of the test as solving the questions.

I think it depends on each student
I believe that we should get 40 mins for English, Reading, and Science and 50 mins for math section

i think 1 hr per section would be better

My kids struggle with the time limits. Practice doing the sections timed. Use a watch to gauge how much time to allocate to the questions–pretty sure some guides go over this. My kids just timed themselves to get a feel for how long they could take for questions. They do struggle with the time limits on act, sat, ap tests too, but have managed to score well. Good luck!

I finish english and math easily. Reading and science almost always screw me over. I don’t understand why you’d give an hour for math and 45 minutes for English and yet only 35 minutes for sections you have to actually carefully read through?? I wish they gave the whole test at once and 2 hours and 55 minutes to finish it

agreed! The science, for me anyway, requires the most thinking, so why not make that one more time?

yeah! I think they should have at least 40 minutes for reading/science; same concept as math’s 60questions 60 minutes

Today’s ACT was by far the most time senstive one yet. But in general, I think there is plently of time for English, a decent amount for Math (although today was a little too short), and Reading + Science tends to be just enough time (although I felt like today’s test was too rushed, especially for reading and kinda for science).

There are some interesting thoughts about speed / timing getting harder on this article that my mom had forwarded me a few weeks ago: <a href=“Is the ACT Getting Harder?”>http://www.thecollegesolution.com/is-the-act-getting-harder/

The Red Book tests I took (from a timing perspective) bore little to no resemblance to the test I took in June or today’s test, except English wasn’t too bad I guess.

The tests are set up so that most students cannot finish on time.

This is exactly what the ACT wants. They want to separate out people with time management and logical thinking skills. That’s what the test scores and that’s what colleges want in their students.

^ Exactly this.
